RVA’s Ki:Theory are about to release a new album entitled KITTY HAWK, and they’ve just dropped a video for the title track that’s a total sensory overload of the most psychedelic sort. Based on the title of the song, I expected it to relate to the town where Wilbur and Orville Wright created the first successful flying machine. But no, once I started watching the video, I discovered that this is actually a song about a kitty that is also a hawk (how hipster is that?). In the video, the kitty hawk in question also looks sort of like a human woman, and it’s fighting a pair of sword-bearing one-eyed men who each have one wing and have to hold onto each other to fly… or something? I don’t know quite what’s going on in this video, to be honest, and I wouldn’t recommend that you expect any sort of linear storyline from its kaleidoscopic dayglo imagery. But it sure is entertaining to watch.

The song in the video is pretty great too. Ki:Theory is apparently just one man–Joel Burleson, a producer who has done remix work for Daft Punk, Queens Of The Stone Age, Cypress Hill and more. But this isn’t an EDM track; instead, on “KITTY HAWK,” Burleson brings his grasp of technology-abetted solo recording to a collection of rocking guitar riffs and melodic vocal lines, which he underpins with a banging programmed drumbeat. The final result is a song that should equally please hyped-up dancefloor commandos and rocker types who just want to bang their heads. Burleson takes a rather subdued approach to the vocal, in which his voice barely ever rises above a whisper, but the juxtaposition with pounding beats and rockin’ guitar riffs allows the whole song to come together perfectly, and makes “KITTY HAWK” a pretty sweet jam.

The KITTY HAWK LP drops on October 29, and will contain a total of 12 songs, including two featuring guest vocalist Maura Davis, formerly of Denali. However, you can already download the song “KITTY HAWK” for free from the band’s website at kitheory.com. And check back on the 29th for the full album!
