Night Idea, “Fly”

Local math-rockers Night Idea have just released a brand new video from their most recent album, Paths. “Fly” is the album’s closing track, and it begins pleasantly, with acoustic guitars and wordless choral vocalizations. The band toughens things up once they move beyond the intro, though, with complex time signatures and impressively technical drumming on the verses. While the group vocals are placid and harmonious throughout the song, the instrumental second half moves in a subtly aggressive direction, with the acoustic guitars of the song’s intro being replaced by a rather atonal guitar solo that eventually pushes the band towards a final crescendo.

This fits well with the action taking place in the video. Directed by Dylan Lewis and starring Paige Connors, the video is full of images taken on the streets of Richmond at night. While the narrative isn’t all that clear, it appears to flash between two different timelines, as Connors has dark hair in some parts of the video and blonde hair in others. She seems to be reckoning with past indiscretions, which have created turmoil in her life; one timeline ends with her returning to what seems to be her parents’ suburban home, while another ends with her standing alone in a wooded patch of wilderness. Even though you can’t tell exactly what’s going on, though, the video’s imagery communicate a feeling that pairs powerfully with the song laid overtop.

In celebration of the “Fly” video’s release, Night Idea have made Paths available for a limited time as a free download from their Bandcamp page. While the album has been out since last summer, we can imagine there are some out there who still haven’t picked up on it yet, so now’s your chance! Stream the album above, and head over to nightidea.bandcamp.com before March 11 to grab your free copy.
