A year and a half after No BS! Brass Band released their most recent album, RVA All Day, they are still bringing us new videos from it–and we should all be glad about that, because this video for “Git It Awn!” is hilarious at times and awesome throughout.
A year and a half after No BS! Brass Band released their most recent album, RVA All Day, they are still bringing us new videos from it–and we should all be glad about that, because this video for “Git It Awn!” is hilarious at times and awesome throughout. Filmed at local house-show venue Our House over the summer by Double Take, the video begins with a poorly-attended show featuring performances from Herschel Stratego, Antonia Vassar, and Giustino Riccio of Bio Ritmo. Meawhile, the members of No BS! Brass Band are swiftly converging on the unsuspecting venue, horns in hand, ready to light the place up (the part where saxophonist David Hood is hanging out the sunroof of a Mazda RX-7 blowing his sax into the air is one of the best things I’ve ever seen).
As they invade, No BS! trombonist Bryan Hooten drops an impressive verse over an incredibly complicated off-time horn part that I could never rap over in a million years (I think the time signature is 7/8, but I honestly can’t even tell). Once No BS! takes the stage, there are suddenly a million people in the audience–and it’s easy to understand why when you hear the excellent groove No BS! is laying down. Our House instantly attains that sweaty, funky atmosphere that tells you not only that the show you’re at is great, but that you’re also gonna need a shower before you lie down in your bed that night and get your sheets all gross. Viewers of this video are able to avoid that icky feeling while still getting to experience this full-force performance, so really, we’re getting the best of both worlds. And on this dreary, drafty day, it’s certainly welcome.
