Tarrant, “Off The Record”

This video, from brand new local band Tarrant, isn’t a typical music video–it’s more like an introduction to what this band’s all about. Featuring several notable members of the local music scene, including Chrissie Griffith (Hypercolor/Fear Of Music) and Russell Lacy (Grease Trigger), this group has coalesced around the talents of frontman Jordan Tarrant. Previously gigging around town as a solo singer/songwriter, Tarrant’s got a powerful backing band with him now, and the addition gives his music a fuller, more distinctive sound. At times, it has more of a modern alt-country sensibility, resembling Wilco or The Jayhawks, but there are definite doses of traditional Americana and old-time country mixed in there as well.

During the six-minute documentary that is “Off The Record,” we hear samples of not one but several new songs the band’s been laying down recently with John Morand at local recording institution Sound Of Music Studio. We also get to meet the players in the band and watch them all interact as they put things together. Between these behind-the-scenes glimpses and the preview of what Tarrant’s live set will sound like, the clip shows exactly what everyone can look forward to when you go see them. And actually, you won’t have long to wait in order to do that! Tarrant is playing with Baltimore band Western Star next Wednesday at Poe’s Pub (2706 E. Main St). Apparently the event will be “a Blue Jean Ball with prizes for the best Canadian Tuxedo,” so show up wearing as much denim as possible and get ready for some great tunes!
