Rainy Day Podcast - DJ CAM

    DJCam.jpg

Its raining outside, so here is your rainy day podcast from the vaults.

This is a mix from 2000 from Dj Cam, he really needs no introduction as one of the originators of jazz/hiphop hybrid music. Good mix for summer nights, or while chilling watching the rain come down. Enjoy!!!

    Dj CAM -

Parisian abstract maestro DJ Cam is well known for his radical reinventions, a life-long musician who's groundbreaking work established him as a pioneer in the worlds of underground hip-hop, trip-hop, and the dance scenes stretching from New York to Paris to Tokyo and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from the hypnotic trance of voodoo culture, Public Enemy, dub and easy-listening jazz, Cam's style assumes a new identity with each and every project since he first hit the scene in 1994 with his debut Underground Vibes and continues to redefine many of the sounds he had a hand in creating throughout his career.

RVA Radio: Squachek Pickles The East Coast

    Pickles-The-East-Coast.jpeg

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

    ----------------

This week we have a very special guest all the way from California. Squachek, and luckily he made a mix just for RVA Magazine. We met Squachek in DC some time back, and we were really amazing by his fiery personality and love for the party. He has a hype personality, and love for music thats just contagious - in this mix you can get a feel for this from the very start.

Here is his message just for RVA:

There are towns where culture hits you in the face and towns where you have to dig for it. There are towns where creativity feels at home and towns where those with the least bit of it are making plans to leave. Between the haves and have nots, Richmond constantly straddles the fence. The town is full of historical baggage and political barriers but also a stubborn people who are striving — successfully — to nurture all things progressive from art to music to craft and commerce. RVA helps the diggers find what they’re looking for and the doers proud to call Richmond home.

    Squachek Bio

The high-energy and light-hearted electro/techno/hip-hop performances by Los Angeles producer SQUACHEK stem from his teenage years in suburban Chicago, when he spent his days writing punk, metal and industrial tunes about bodily functions, Geraldo Rivera, and death by botulism-tainted pickles.

When he's not crushing dance floors at parties, his DIRTYPUMPS club series, and festivals around the world, Squachek remixes and produces other artists and composes scores for animation, film and television. He can even be found on camera as his other nom de guerre: Johnny Orlando Jr., the West Coast correspondent for top metal blog Metal Injection.

    ----------------

We have had many great DJs and producers on RVA Radio, but few that I know as well as this week's guest, Doddie Braza. Doddie is one of the best and most talented DJs I have ever met and worked with, hands down. He always has his ear out for new music and sounds - and has an exciting mixing ability that I have always been inspired by. Here we have a set of mini mixes he sent me to check out. Lots of new music here, with some chillwave vibes as well. Take some time to check it all out - and add him on soundcloud and facebook so you can catch him live. --Reinhold

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

    ----------------

Today we welcome in DJ Obscure from the DC/Baltimore area with his Lego Land "Rocked on Some Blocks" mix. Obscure is well known in his area from various Symbiotic, B.A.D.A.S.S, and Steez parties. He will be playing in town on the 18th for the Darth & Vader show. This mix is a nice electro/techno mix with some heavy hitters.

    Obscure Bio -

Brought up in the Baltimore electro scene at an early age, Dj 0bscure (Marcus) has moved up and down the east coast rapidly. Moving people with a combination of hard-hitting electro, breaks, techno, progressive melodic breakdowns, a few dutchy beats and exceeding amounts of energy on stage it is no stretch of the imagination as to why his skills have impressed the likes of Symbiotic, Ultra Promotions, Camp Bisco Promotions, Give Productions, Steez Promo and Badass Raves.

Playing everywhere between DC, MD, PA, NY, NC & WV including venues like  Echostage, Ultrabar, The Fillmore (Silver Spring), U-Street Music Hall, Baltimore Soundstage, The Paradox, Baltimore Convention Center (Otakon 2012) along with more outdoor venues than your mom has room for. If it's not the track selection, it's the carefully composed progression of his sets that sets him apart. Having opened for like Big Gigantic, Kill Paris, Savoy, Zedd, Dirty Talk, Lucky Date and Dylan Sanders, there are no signs of Dj 0bscure slowing down.

See him at LAZERFACE with Darth & Vader April 18th

    In Depth: Kevin Yost

    week.jpg

In-Depth is a podcast from RVA Magazine focusing on unique and talented electronic music producers and DJs. In this podcast, we will hopefully introduce you to some new creative music. This week we have a mix from Kevin Yost - a name very recognized in the deep house and the Jazz Influence Compilations.

    ----------

    Kein Yost -

This is a live set recorded in NYC March 16th @ Strangelove. This is a new concept I am experimenting with, which is basically my mobile studio in one small case (apc 40, mpk 49, audio interface and laptop). The idea is to start from scratch and create the music on the spot, feeding off the crowd. Every show is completely different. So far I find it challenging and more exciting than DJing. Looking forward to booking more shows like this in the near future. Enjoy--ky

    Kevin Yost Bio

Kevin Yost has become one of the most influential electronic music producers of the past five years. A contemporary master of jazz fusion, he was responsible for creating “One Starry Night”, thought of by many as one of the top ten house records of the past decade. His debut album of the same name topped 50,000 units in sales ands gained him global recognition as a supreme DJ/Producer.

Kevin Yost, keyboardist, percussionist, producer & worldwide DJ. Not too shabby for a guy from a town with a population of less than 6000 people.

Hailing from Waynesboro, PA, Kevin developed an early interest in the world of music. Stimulated by percussion and drums, he quickly grew fond of jazz music and was heavily influenced by the likes of Chuck Mangione and Miles Davis. In his teens he discovered dance music thru the sounds of 1980 electro and hip- hop. From such Kevin continued his interest in music and pursued it in a high school for the arts.

His own unique blend of jazz influences developed in the early 90’s when he began experimenting with different flavors of acid jazz. Working harder and harder to develop a style that mixed jazz and house he looked for a label support in 1996. From such, he worked on various remixes for i! Records (NJ) as well as a variety of original material for what was to become his jazz/house fusion sound. Spurred by this i! Records pursued him to take the music to another level.

This grew into an association with Guidance Records (Chicago) and a release entitled “Unprotected Sax”. With the unique success of this EP, Kevin wanted the sound he was creating to feature a new formula. What he came up was an EP called "Night of a 1000 Drums (IR128). It release on i! in early 1997 opened a door to and gave focue to Kevin Yost the artist. This EP featured what many have called the best house record of that year, “One Starry Night” . Its blend of Caribbean influenced percussion and jazz improvisation make it no less than a classic.

The record also featured Kevin’s retro based AKY Funk & and Stuff and another keyboard extravaganza entitled A Hip on You. Soon after this release Kevin developed the “Dawn Approaches EP”. This EP highlighted Kevins experimentation with strong percussive elements and progressive keyboard textures. In all it proved to be quite extraordinary and spawned the hit “Spring Again”. This was soon followed up with his most unique record to date, The Stick & Stones EP. A four tracker that proved a mind blending merger of jazz and progressive electronica.

Mr. Yost has also proved to be quite the remixer developing unique reworks and new versions of records for Sony, Polygram, MCA & Virgin. Included in such are his powerful remix on the Kodo Drummers “The Hunted”, and a very notable remix of EBTG “Five Fathoms”. While his current schedule provides little time for much else other than producing, Kevin still enjoys following his DJ-ing roots and he has been a featured DJ spinning at venues in all over the world.

    Akasha's Conduit EP

    Shara.art.jpg

George Rollins, aka AKASHA, has released his first EP, Conduit, on the Vermin Street label. This release has seen immediately shot to the top five on addictech.com, putting Akasha up there with other Vermin Street heavyweights like Mochipet, Bleep Bloop, Sonkin, Mr. Jennings, +verb, and NastyNasty. Check out the release below and info from Akaha about this release. We can't wait to hear more from Akasha!

(*the previewed song is "Again & Again")

It wasn't until a surrender took place of allowing the songs to become what it wanted to naturally and flowing with the inspiration, rather than forcing the will upon the music, did the songs begin to show themselves as something unique and worth while. That is why this new EP is called Conduit: a natural or artificial channel through which something fluid is conveyed. Akasha listens to these songs as manifestations of his subconscious, listening with miraculous wonder that they spawned from nothing and have became a capsule of emotion and spirit. By relaxing and enjoying the process of creation, rather than judging the music every step of the way, Akasha has been able to open the doors of creation and consistently make music that has depth and can be considered complete.

This is Akasha's first official EP that he is honored to have released by the very reputable label Vermin Street. The EP is a blend of rhythms and vibes that could be fit into a variety of categories, with a focus point around ethnic sounds and organic instruments, each filled with many layers of soundscapes. These songs are less dance anthems and more like listening to a musical story unfold. Being often told that his music invokes a vision of a scene in a movie, the tunes have a cinematic quality to them that Akasha seeks out when searching for his own new music. Listeners can expect much more to come, the journey has just begun for what Akasha has to bring for us.

    RVA Radio: DJ Rometti

    Rometti_logo_with_image.jpg

RVA RADIO is down with bringing you new music whenever we find it. Often we profile and share out local producers and DJs. If you are interested in being profiled on here, hit us up at hello@rvamag.com with a mix!

    --------------

Stoked to bring you one of RVA's own, Jeremy Rometti! Jeremy has been bringing his unique sounds to us for over 17 years; he is one of few that can roll between many styles in a set. In this set for RVA, he gives us some great house, tech house, and nu disco funky sounds. Make sure and check out his pages...

    Bio - DJ Rometti

Born in Roubaix France, an industrial town on the Northern border of the countries Belgium and France; Jeremy Rometti Hartman was exposed to music early in life. His father an avid guitarist and harmonica player would hold jam sessions with friends at the family’s home. Many types of music including blues, rock and jazz could be found in the family home These were largely made up from Jeremy’s parent’s extensive vinyl record collection consisting of thousands of records. Jeremy and his family permanently moved stateside at the age of 5. At the age of 12 Jeremy received his first guitar for Christmas followed by a couple of keyboards later on in the years. In high school Jeremy played in a couple of start up novice punk bands that would hold practice sessions in several garages. Jeremy played rhythm guitar and seldom sang vocals. It wasn’t until 1991 in a local Richmond nightclub when electronic music was discovered by the inquisitive ears of this teenager. It was an industrial / techno party that inspired Jeremy to his calling. Four years later he purchased his first Technics Turntables, a Gemini mixer as well as vinyl to accommodate his new instruments.

    1994
Jeremy spent hours and hours at a time in his bedroom discovering and mastering this new trait we know as deejaying. He soon moved to downtown Richmond VA in 1995 and met other djs with the same interests in music. A couple years later he was playing at different clubs and events throughout the city. Within the 17 years of playing out and experimenting into different genres of underground electronic dance music, Jeremy has molded his own exquisite style across the EDM spectrum. Known for collaborating everything from Drum and Bass to Tech House ensures everyone will apreciate the sounds that disperse from the speakers. Romettti has played in 3 different countries alongside internationally known acts such as Donald Glaude, Bjorn Niclas, BT, Noel Sanger, Terry Mullan, Charles Feelgood, Monk, Frankie Bones, Dj Irene, Josh Wink, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion and Jen Lasher just to name a few. His mix sets can be described as an auditory roller coaster ride with deep minimal phases to builds of peak hour funky goodness that seem to transpire from the energy and emotion he personally brings out of himself. Nevertheless any style can be well accomplished into a seamless set which makes him an all time crowd pleaser.
