Cut The Cord Radio Ep #121 - Kelli Strawbridge & Conley from Animal-RVA

Tyler and Kelli talking about when his band, Kings, performed on the show earlier this year.

They discuss how the band was disappointed and pissed because they were expecting a more professional studio. The eight-piece band apparently freaked out the neighbors by being Black and hanging out on the lawn while Tyler drank himself stupid.

Kelli gets in to talking about his own podcast, The Hustle Season. Kelli talks about one of the guests on, The Hustle Season who creates anti-ISIS propaganda. Because ISIS is bad...

Conley from the Queer art/dance party collective Animal-RVA, phones in. They talk about his two-story dance party at the Hofheimer in Richmond.

Tyler's longtime friend, PJ calls in and they debate the merits of publishing video vs. audio-only podcasts. Tyler's neurosis brings the conversation around to how none of the major videos that Cut The Cord has produced ended up looking like he imagined they would.

Sometimes you have to take a look back to understand what is happening in front of you. From the opening note of this episode it seemed that a look back was inevitable. An Easter massacre is revisited two years later, and with similar results. A financial windfall leads to some bad decisions, and we are reminded of another who parlayed his hard earned money into hard time. Yet another scam is derailed by greed, and we can't help but think that this one might have just worked if they had learned to play it cool.

Things can look very different depending on your perspective. For instance sitting on a couch in your yard provides a great view, but it looks pretty trashy to your neighbors. Fondue is loved by those who have 5 hours to kill, and despised by a person who is hungry now. Amazon is the perfect way to buy a gift, and their notifications are the easiest way to ruin the surprise. A missing tooth on a child can be adorable, but a missing tooth because you were having a good time is not. Tara Reid...well you get the idea.

The AVR Podcast: Music, Art, and Creativity in RVA Episode 018 - Pierce Love, 2~Da, and Halfro (Bland Camp)

The AVR Podcast features some of the most interesting people in the city as they talk about what, how, and why they create. Whether it's music, art, or any other form of creativity, I get the full story on how the vision came to be, and how it then became a reality. The primary focus is on underground musicians, innovative artists, and revolutionary creators of all sorts in the beautiful city of Richmond, Virginia. This program aims to be a meeting ground for creators and innovators of all types, a place to share ideas, and a place to tell the stories of the countless creative individuals and organizations that make RVA such a wonderful and exciting place to be. We try to talk as much about the history of my guests and their specific realm of creativity as much as possible, but occasionally we get side tracked and talk about whatever the hell we want!

This past week, I had the opportunity of meeting with and talking to a very talented new group of artists called Bland Camp. It consists of Pierce Love, 2~Da, and Halfro. Pierce and 2~Da combine a variety of styles in their music, ranging from rapping to singing and varying constantly in flow and delivery. Halfro, also a rapper, is more inclined to call himself a producer, and over the years has become well versed in making catchy, powerful beats at a rapid pace. I speak with the artists about their writing, recording, and production process, positive and negative experiences while performing, and the importance of positivity. The group members all agree, spreading positivity, being genuine, and having a sense of dedication are the most basic and important things to do as a person and as an artist.

The boat season window is a small one, but if you know where to go that small window can yield some amazing results. We hit the PPP festival to see what this party is all about, and I am not sure if the police were crashing our party, or if we crashed theirs. A first date is ruined, and a first tubing trip is as well, but for very different reasons. The face of sports continues to change, and ESPN is trying to find their way in this new world. Let the "fighting" begin...or whatever it is.
