Some serious rock n’ roll excitement is coming to the 9:30 Club next weekend, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to be a part of it for free, courtesy of your pals at RVA Magazine! Benjamin Booker, the young guitar-slinger who burst onto the scene last year with a raging self-titled debut album from ATO Records (making him labelmates with J. Roddy Walston & The Business, among many other names you’d know), is coming to Washington DC on Sunday April 5, bringing his stripped-down, bullshit-free, high-energy sounds to the 9:30 Club stage, and you’re not gonna want to miss it!

Booker got his start in the Florida punk scene back when he was a teenager, and made his name in the blues clubs of New Orleans. He clearly owes a big debt to the blues tradition of that city, but anyone who cites The Gun Club, Blind Willie Johnson, and T. Rex as equal influences is bound to have a refreshing new take on that long-running sound. In fact, you can see exactly what Benjamin Booker has to offer in this clip of him playing the first single from his debut album, “Violent Shiver,” live on Seattle’s KEXP. It smokes, check it out:

Booker’s had some associations with Jack White’s Third Man Records lately–he just released a live EP on the label–and he’ll be joined at the 9:30 Club by Olivia Jean, the former frontwoman for the Black Belles, who has also done quite a bit of work with Third Man. Her debut solo album, Bathtub Love Killings, brings equal touches of the old-time country sound Jack White loves to dip into and a 60s-style garage-baroque feel. She’ll surely do a great job of getting you warmed up for Booker, so don’t miss this double-shot of classic rock n’ roll sounds from a couple of talented and actually quite young artists!
