Summer is still strong here in the Commonwealth, but weekend mornings are nice and nothing says ‘Sunday AM’ like a trip to a flea market with $20 in your hands.

Summer is still strong here in the Commonwealth, but weekend mornings are nice and nothing says ‘Sunday AM’ like a trip to a flea market with $20 in your hands.

Flea Markets tend to be a lot more diverse in material compared yard sales and thrift stores because most items are unique from the vendors. With a mix of rural and urban settings, and tons and tons of history, Richmond is primed to be a hub for any flea market fan. If you’re patient and willing, you’re bound to find a gem to brag about.

Zsa Zsa Douglas, an Oregon Hill native and self-described flea market expert, has been going to flea markets ever since she could remember and continues it as a hobby at least two to four times a month.

It’s getting spooky around here…..come out October 25th for “Kids In Costume”. A safe trick or treat…candy, more candy, Monster Money giveaways and did we say LOTS OF CANDY???!!!!

“My mom, grandmother, and aunt always took me,” she said. “I see it as like a genuine way to recycle things, you get things that people have treasured and held onto for decades and then you get to treasure and hold onto it afterward.”

Douglas mentioned that bartering and haggling are two very big things to remember because most people will be open to negotiating at a lower price.

“If you see something and it’s a good price, buy it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had friends say they’ve seen something for a certain price and then regretted it because it might have been ten dollars that really stood out to you and you just won’t forget.”

As our list below shows, some of the cities best flea markets are not actually in the city, but Douglas thinks the city has plenty of potential for starting up a great flea market community.

“I wish there was one in the inner city limits and I guess they do have them but they’re on the edge of southside, mechanicsville and henrico areas,” she said. “I want people to get something started in the city more than anything.”

RVAMag came up with a list of the closest flea markets by the city for those in search of all sorts of things and for those who want to sell all sorts of things. Be sure to call ahead for dates and times and remember, the early bird gets the worm of the day.
