Calling out to all skate fans and those passionate about low quality alcoholic drinks, a new locally produced skate film, Bum Wine, is coming to The Byrd next weekend.
This is the 3rd film from local videographer Dennis Williford, and he’s pumped to be back at the Byrd with his new film.
Williford, the editor and director of this movie, spared some time with RVA Mag to explain his creative method as well as what we’re to expect September 5th during the premiere.
Check out the trailer below:
Williford said that the majority of the dudes featured in the video are RVA area skaters and that many scenes were filmed in our great city. He said there is a lot of great talent in this production, but of special note he’s got tricks from professional and RVA local Trent Hazelwood, who rides for a local RVA company called Shipyard. You’ll also see some shots from towns near Richmond – with locations in Lynchburg and DC also making the final cut.
Skateboarding has always been a kind of renegade sport, a passion that tries to break free from conventional scenes, and tends to get people in trouble. Since so many great skating locations seem to be private properties or just anti-skating in general we went out on a limb and asked Williford about the police’s involvement in the film. He said that they were “harassed every day by police,” and that it hasn’t seemed to “get any easier as you get older.”
By now we’re trying to find the correlation between MD 20/20, Cisco and Wild Irish Rose, (classic bum wines) to skating so we delved a little deeper found that a lot of the filming was Williford and “lots of buddies having fun, promoting a lot of drinking,” he said.
Bum Wine is “more of a funny play or a product that would never be promoted or otherwise brought to attention,” says Williford. “It’s all mostly just satire on me and my friends. We have always had a good time while drinking and shit there’s always stories to be told after the fact.”
After putting so much time and effort into Bum Wine, Williford said that he doesn’t have any current projects. This, however, doesn’t mean that we can’t expect great things in the future.
This is an opportunity you don’t want to miss! Make sure to make your way down to the Byrd theater at 5PM Saturday, September 4th.
