I was just talking to a friend of mine (fellow RVAMag writer Doug Nunnally) about Waxahatchee and how there must be a collection of old Nirvana, Weezer, and Pavement songs hidden someplace and a record producer recently let that collection leak out to studios around the nation and that’s why everything sounds like a b-side from Terror Twilight.

I meant that in a good way, I really do, but I can’t help but laugh when I listen to folks like Ty Segall or the above mentioned Waxahatchee, and then listen to an old Pavement album and find and endless number of similarities. I prefer my musicians to create original sounds, but if you’re going to replicate something, do it well – and there’s a lot of folks doing that 90’s sound real well.

It’s good to relive the dream, it’s great to hear folks listening to this grungy/garage sound again, and its a lot better than dub step.

Getting past my 90’s music rant, lets talk about RVA Locals Sideways Orange and their new track, “More or Less (Lucky Guess)”:

Prepare to kick on an episode of Pete and Pete and dig the vibes blasting from this track. Sideways Orange, featuring Mitchell Latimer on bass, Josh Santamaria on drums and
Garrett Whitlow on guitar/vocals, hail from here in RVA – they’ve got a new record, We Are The Moon Dogs, dropping on Oct. 21. It was Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Lance Koehler at Minimum Wage Recordings here in town as well.

Sideways Orange has been busy this year. They released a four track EP earlier in January which played on similar 90’s alt-tones. The vocal mix over powers a bit, but it’s something they’ve since moved away from (for the better.)

Either way, there’s a lot to love on this record as well. Check it out below:

You can keep up with Sideways Orange on facebook here, and check them out at Our House when they play Halloween night, or Nov. 15 at The Camel with together PANGEA & White Reaper
