I was doing my hipster duty this weekend while making breakfast – listening to NPR’s Weekend Edition – and what did I hear during the first half hour? The unmistakeable brass section and beats from RVA’s own No BS! Brass Band with the soothing voice of band co-founder Reggie Pace.

Per usual, Weekend Edition host Rachel Martin spoke with Pace about the release of their new 6th album, Bass Knuckles, about how their sound connects to the New Orleans jazz scene, but mixes other modern forms to create such a unique sound.

“Those fantastic brass bands from New Orleans, they already have their sound, and they have a tradition, and it’s a part of American history already. There is no adding yourself to that,” Pace, who plays trombone in the band, told Martin. “We wanted to make something that sounded like the music that we listened to, and the city that we lived in.”

Martin also called out Reggie and friends for being all-male which is pretty hilarious.

Check out the full interview below, and check out our interview with Pace about their new album here.

On a side note, Martin said she doesn’t consider Richmond a music town, which hurts my civic pride.

Brass Knuckles November 20th, you’ll be able to find it digitally on itunes.

No BS! is no stranger to NPR, they were featured in one of the most crowded Tiny Desk concerts in NPR history back in 2013.
