Feelings is the follow-up to 2015’s succinct and captivating Melodies and continues to raise the bar that’s been consistently rising since the release of their phenomenal record Junior back in 2013.
Recorded at Scott’s Addition Sound “over the course of a long donut-fueled weekend,” the band again enlisted the help of local engineer Allen Bergendahl of Viking Recording Service for mixing and tracking, while also utilizing Bryan Walthall of Stereo Image RVA again to step in and handle the mastering.
The behind-the-scenes consistency helped Lightfields move their signature three-guitar sound forward, and continue to cement their style of blending different styles into one compact identity.
“Everyone in the band has different tastes, but all of us are a sucker for a good hook when we hear one,” says guitarist/vocalist Coldon Martin. “These songs continue our tradition of trying to take everything we love about both sweet, indie-pop songs and super-heavy hard-rock and throwing them into our sonic blender.”
The by-product of this sonic blender can be heard throughout Feelings‘ five tracks.
The “woo-ooo” moments of “Jerks” will appease pop rock lovers while the crunchy guitar moments of “What” are enough to make any garage rock aficionado instantly fall in love. Title track “Feelings” brings both styles together the best with guitar parts that seamlessly bounce from blistering rhythms to plucky melodies, while Coldon Martin does his best pop-punk crooning in order to perfectly set the pace of the EP. “Party” is a tamer offering from the band as they lyrically address their personal limitations while the guitar anxiously simmers underneath.
As a nice contrast, Lightfields follow that introspective offering with “Edited,” the closing track that offers the most thrills of any song on the record. With its urgent pace and riotous conclusion, Lightfields ensure that Feelings concludes on the strongest note possible.
Don’t forget to grab your copy of Feelings this Friday at their Bandcamp, and also don’t miss a chance to hear these new songs live. The band plays next on October 11th at The Broadberry where they’ll open for garage shredders Diarrhea Planet, a line-up that’s almost too good to be true.
The show will be extra special too as it will mark the first Lightfields performance with guitarist Mike Cruz (formerly of Imaginary Sons and currently in Leach).
