Songs about a significant other/lover/old flame can often be sappy, emotionless, cruel, and sometimes downright awful. Saw Black’s new song “Rosie’s Comin’ Home” is none of those things.

Songs about a significant other/lover/old flame can often be sappy, emotionless, cruel, and sometimes downright awful. Saw Black’s new song “Rosie’s Comin’ Home” is none of those things.

Black, who’s real name is Justin Black, is a local folk artist and co-owner of the RVA label Crystal Pistol Records and he just premiered the song on GoldFlake Paint.

“Rose’s Comin Home” is stripped down, raw, simple, and shows the pain of missing someone while they’re away.

Black said the song is about his significant other at the time who was coming back to town from her parents’ mountain house in Georgia.

“It’s about the mundanity of love and the little things we do day to day to try and provide a space for one another in a relationship and in a home,” Black said. It’s one of the more stripped down songs on the record but I think it’s sparse production acts as a metaphor for the story and feelings in the song.”

The song is real, raw and not at all over the top when speaking about someone close to you.

“I’ll have someone to talk to, other than my dog,” Black sings softly over the simple guitar strumming in the background.

He also mentions just wanting to lounge on the couch and watch some stupid shows with Rosie and isn’t that what we all want at the end of a hard day?

While the above two are completely relatable for me, here is my favorite line:

“Forget about the emptiness/I’m getting back my soul…”

The track, which is off his upcoming album Azalea Days, was recorded in his basement studio by the James River on a mostly-working 8-track tape machine.

The multi-instrumentalist recorded everything himself and the song was written and recorded in the same day, the day before she came home. Black has also recorded the albums for fellow RVA musicians Dharma Bombs, Death Birds Surf Club, and 3 legged Dog in his basement.

Saw Black’s debut record Azalea Days drops February 10th, via Crystal Pistol Records so be on the lookout for that and a more in depth interview on the album.
