Sound Check | Yeison Landero, The Phlegms, Die Standing & More!

Get Tight Lounge

It is hard to match up to good cumbia. I was another hypnotized face in the sea when Get Tight last hosted a cumbia band, and I intend on dancing just as hard as I did that day when Yeison Landero comes to town. The Colombian singer has that sailing vocal that moves over the waves of rhythm and accordion. I do not speak Spanish myself, but listening to beautiful singing in a language you do not understand is like seeing colors you don’t comprehend—things start to swirl and build a scene that you can translate. While there are no other bands on the set, Billy Crystal Fingers will be spinning an all-vinyl DJ set to keep us all grooving.

Banditos

The Phlegms are going in regular rotation. They meet somewhere in the middle of Fugazi, Amyl and the Sniffers, and The Chats. They’re celebrating the release of their debut album, Gulp! It is genuinely great, this is festival talent playing at Banditos. My favorite track off the album is “Bored and Ambivalent,” with inspirational drums and tension injected continuously until the chorus.

Gleex is my fucking comfort band. Their two singles bring such a pure and unbridled smile to my face. They are egg punk through and through, and brother, it gets me going. This will be my first time seeing Ing. Their recordings are very lo-fi, and in my opinion, that adds so much to the songs. It totally protects the bedroom pop/indie rock character. There’s something really special about these guys—a certain surrealist quality that makes you walk through your dreams rather than just experience them.

Clenchers are a local post-punk/no wave act I’ve wanted to catch for a while. They make me think of the B-52s, Oh-OK, and The Slits all at the same time. I love how fun they are. It’s straight-up fun to put on their demos and just bounce around.

The Camel

Die Standing is the heavy-heavy from Lynchburg. They’ve had a handful of RVA appearances and have seen a great reaction so far. They fit in with the kind of hardcore that leans on metal, the stuff that populates Richmond’s heavier side. They’re out with Opium Church, a doomy gloom group also from Lynchburg. They don’t have any tunes out yet, but from what I can find online, they are breakdown-bound.

Next, we’ve got some of my favorite heavy locals: SLAAT. Self-described as Slaatcore, they’re a perfect mix of hardcore and pure chaos. Their live shows are dynamite, perfect to slam around to. Paradiso is coming from a bit more of a traditional metal place. They’re all about shredding around a lick.

Colo is the NoVA group of the lot. They’ve got an incredible range—metal, hardcore, indie, shoegaze. Super baffled by these guys, but I respect the hell out of it.

New Tunes

Spaghetti Dinner by Rubber Dagger

Rubber Dagger scratches a really specific itch in my brain, and their debut album is making me kick my leg. It’s reminiscent of classic punk and college rock (think Replacements meets early Black Flag) but has the charm and energy of the modern garage lo-fi scene. I think my standout track is “RVA Vamp,” a reference to the mystical ghoul that stalks Hollywood Cemetery. They gave this track a bit more of an atmospheric, surfy feel that’s really easy to groove along to.
