Tons of great ones at tons of great places. Some great out-of-towners, but a plethora of local favs. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.
IONNA, Girlspit, Flora and the Fauna
thursday August 7th, 2025
Banditos
Insanely tough bill at Banditos, goddamn. IONNA is a truly fascinating local artist that creates the most magical and ethereal shapes in sound. This music makes me feel as if I stepped into a sensory deprivation chamber and let the secrets of the universe reveal themselves to me in the void.
Girlspit, on the other hand, makes me feel my feet planted firmly in the cold earth. Their synth-punk sound is incredibly grounded and narrates the walk you take home from work every day. It is an incredibly city-based sound, you can feel the concrete and creatures crawling in and out of the grates around you. Their crunchy sound pairs so well with the heavily reverberating vocals.
I remember drifting into the Broadberry when I first saw Flora and the Fauna and being in absolute awe. They are a wild lot but equally capable of capturing a beautifully sensational sound. Ever since that moment, I have been a wholehearted supporter of them. They are some of the most honest guitar music I have ever laid ears on.
Deathcat, Strawberry Moon, Twin Flims
Friday August 8th, 2025
The Camel
After a handful of fantastic singles, local garage/indie rockers Deathcat are releasing their new EP and have got a real fun night to celebrate. They’ve had a steady rise through the Richmond college rock scene and have come out as one of the most exciting and relatable young acts out there. I got a chance to hear the EP early and could not speak any higher about it. It really has been magical to watch Deathcat grow, so let’s go party about it.
Strawberry Moon has also seen immense growth since their last release, Smoon. They are a really mesmerizing act—true rockers to the core. They know how to keep your feet moving and keep a tune between your ears.
Twin Films is another fantastic group in the spectrum of mid-20s RVA music. They are one-of-a-fuckin’-kind. They have an electronic pulse to them that gets in your marrow, and an aesthetic that makes them seem ready for anything. Found myself listening to “Song for Thomas Merton,” a single from last year, quite a bit recently.
Grocer, Shagwuf, Tentative Decisions, Jake The Dog
Saturday August 9th, 2025
The Camel
I am always excited to see Philadelphia’s weirdo trio Grocer in Richmond. They are part of that wild art-punk scene that has categorized the East Coast underground over recent years. They have the colorful and insane lyrical sensibilities of Viagra Boys but a sound a bit closer to the likes of Gustaf. Truly a weird lot, and that’s why I am willing to follow them into battle.
Shagwuf is a personal favorite that I have written about a number of times. The long and short of it: they embody rock ’n’ roll more than just about anyone else. One of the best in the game.
Speaking of legends—ladies and gentlemen, Tentative Decisions. They have been on a hot streak of great shows I simply can’t help but cover. They have become a leading factor in the ever-growing movement of post-punk in Richmond, but have also gotten some serious attention across America and Europe with their debut album.
Jake The Dog has got it going on. For a Richmond band, they capture the most beautiful and pure California summer sound. “Multitool” is one of the most reassuring and sentimental songs I have heard in quite a while. It hits like the Beach Boys mixed with Cage the Elephant.

Richmond’s Writer’s Round: A Songwriter Showcase
Friday August 8th, 2025
The Broadberry
This is a really interesting lineup of 7 local songwriters that are all getting a chance on the big stage to showcase their talent. As far as I can tell, they will each be solo, with all the emphasis being on the substance in the songs. Songwriting like this should almost be seen like fine visual art, and I am glad the Broadberry is taking the role of the gallery.
New Tunes
Hurting Other People by Shagg Carpet
New Railgun single is out! “I Don’t Know What They’re Saying… But I Still Love J-Pop!” covers all the bases. It has that quick hi-hat bounce that makes you want to bop around, powerful vocals that hit rocks together in your chest until something sparks, and a melodic exploration into the psychedelic to keep your mind in the stars.
This one is on the longer side—closer to 5 minutes—but it’s paced so well. There are countless moments in this song to find and explore. Overall, a powerful, hard-hitting tune.
