Sound Check | Bat, Bio Ritmo, Marilyn & The Grand Slam Band & More!

by | Aug 13, 2025 | DOWNTOWN RVA, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, QUEER RVA

Getting lost in it. Really loving this week’s lineup, all sorts of different stuff, dancing to it all. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Local alt-pop crooner Marilyn is back with her Grand Slam Band for her second annual birthday show. She strikes a perfect balance between arena-level and lo-fi sounds producing something larger than life, yet still grounded. I love that her music sticks to organic instrumentation while seamlessly shifting into electronic or hip-hop textures. It’s super versatile.

This is great dancing music, great sing-along music, great party music, so go make it a great birthday party.

Caroline Vain is in support. Any songwriter could take notes from her. She delivers some of the most beautiful local folk/indie/singer-songwriter melodies around, showcased in her debut EP.

Also on the bill is Mid. I first discovered this jazzy group through their collaboration with local R&B singer CHRISTIAN. Since then, I’ve been able to dive deeper into their extensive catalog of atmospheric dreams. They capture a really pure and adolescent scene that’s fantastic to get lost in. I highly recommend getting lost in the depths of their discography, there’s some truly dreamy stuff in there.

Bat, Heavens Gate, Laughing Corpse, Vigil
Friday August 15th, 2025
Cobra Cabana

Local speed freaks Bat are headlining Cobra. Their most recent album, Under the Crooked Claw, has all the power and thrashing of Metallica and other pure ’80s hard rockers. Sometimes I have trouble getting into hard rock/metal/thrash, but these guys were a breeze.

Simple instructions: put it on, turn it up, turn it a little bit more, a little bit higher again, now drive off as fast as you can.

Heavens Gate is the touring act, and I’m impressed by how many snare hits they can cram into a single second. A band like this fits just as easily in a dimly lit, packed club as it does on a massive main stage. Their vocals are just absurdly good, barked and torn and squeezed with every fiber of their being.

Laughing Corpse leans a little more to the hardcore side of the spectrum but still has the power to match anyone else here. They remind me of an even more sped-up GBH, mainly because of the vocals, which I absolutely adore. There’s such a strong sneer in every line.

I can’t be too sure that Vigil is human. There’s certainly something otherworldly in their sound. They sound like metal, not the genre, but the substance. They sound like the personification of a rockslide off the side of a mountain. Their guitars rip and shred more than a chainsaw.

Bio Ritmo
Sunday August 17th, 2025
Get Tight Lounge

I never fail to be amazed at the sheer diversity in Richmond music. Bio Ritmo first formed here in 1991 and has since captured every spectrum of the Latin sound.

They are so rich and full, listening to their music is like bathing in a sunny river (not the James, something cleaner), or drinking late into the night with your dearest and most trusted friends. When you hear Bio Ritmo, you are either under the brightest sunshine you have ever experienced, or surrounded by a blanket of warm candlelight, far away from the fluorescents.

It is hard to sit here and write this. I want to dance. I want to run. I want to dip my girlfriend and kiss her sweetly while listening to this music. I could listen to these horns blare away until my skin was gone and I was just satiated bones.

New Tunes

Juicy by Snack Tyme
Dammit, I love a groovy ballad. Who the hell is holding my hand while I listen to this? Because I can certainly feel someone guiding me. This funky R&B track has got me feeling all sorts of ways. The vocals are both close and distant, universally around while staring straight into your eyes.

The guitar really caught my ear, soloing away into the stars. Such a purely visual track, seeing oranges, yellows, and purples drifting into each other. With this being their first single, I’m excited to see what else they have in store.

Spring Session by Yokedevils
If you liked what you heard in the above-mentioned Cobra show, check out Spring Session, Yokedevils’ EP fresh off the press. I’ve really fallen in love with things that land in the fields of noise rock and punk.

This solo project is volatile and explosive, a booming, violent drum sound propelling it through the haze. One thing I love about this release is the beautiful name and cover: such a serene scene, soft purple flowers. Click the first track and it’s all nuked away.

I think my favorite track of the six is the finale, “Prompt.” It’s the moodiest and deepest, and it will be on steady rotation my way.

River City by DanielD
A steady nightclub beat guides you into this Richmond celebration. This release from DanielD is super dancey but still maintains a moody, dimly lit atmosphere. DJs, get your hands on it for your next performance.

Overall, it’s a calming yet bouncy tune.
