RVA Mag First Friday Picks September 2017

With fall quietly approaching and school back in session for many Richmond students, now is the perfect time to gather friends and family for a fun night out.

First Fridays is Richmond’s monthly art walk event, which showcases artwork from local artists, food from local vendors, and the various talents from people throughout the community. This month’s event is set to take place in Downtown Richmond this Friday. Here are some things to look forward to this month.

“Theory of Place” at Candela

The “Theory of Place” exhibition is opening at Candela Books + Gallery starting on September 1. The exhibition features art pieces that revolve around the idea of place and the environments that form our identities. The exhibit features work from Marcus Desieno, Courtney Johnson, Camilo Ramirez, and Justin James Reed.

Endeavor RVA will be celebrating their 2 year anniversary by holding an event on Friday from 6-11 PM. This month’s exhibit will feature work from artists such as Chad Hilton, Emily Herr, and and Erek Jones, as well as Endeavor house crew Eli McMullen, Ian C. Hess, and Christina Wing Chow. The event will feature live musical performances from THIVAand Vanilla Summit, with Arroz RVA serving food.

Phoenix Handcraft mosaics at Chocolates by Kelly

Johannah Willsey from Phoenix Handcraft will be showcasing her hand-made mosaics at Chocolates by Kelly. Willsey will be displaying her recent work, including her Domestica and Nature Therapy series, as well as some of her older work and mirrors. Chocolates by Kelly will be serving chocolate treats alongside the exhibit.

“RVA Cures: Conquering Childhood Cancer” at URDowntown

University of Richmond Downtown will be opening a new exhibit called “RVA Cures: Conquering Childhood Cancer,” an exhibit run by Connor’s Heroes that features photographs by Kristin Seward and paintings of zebrafish done by Richmond children and other artists.

“X2 – Flipped Vectors and Junkyard Mashups” at 9WG Studios

Photographer Greg Garner will be opening an exhibit called “X2 – Double Exposure Photography”, which features a series of photographs that highlight the contrast between Richmond’s landmarks and junkyards, all shot with a striking double exposure effect. It will be featured at 9WG Studios.

“What Was I Thinking” and “Wet Hot American Summer” at the Coalition

If you’re looking for a laugh, Coalition Theater will a perform an improv comedy show called “What Was I Thinking”, which is set to explore the hilarity and awkwardness of teenage adolescence. Afterwards, the theater will perform a live read of the 2001 film “Wet Hot American Summer.”

“130 Years of Übercorp: 1887–2017” at Gallery 5

Local artist Noah Scalin has put together a new exhibit at Gallery5 called 130 Years of Übercorp: 1887-2017. There will be objects from the collections of more than 30 artists and music from League of Space PiratesFlashlight Tag, and Maximum Zero. Since its formation in 1887 by a German immigrant here in Übercorp has been a powerful force in the pharmaceutical world. get to knowÜbercorp here.

“Tape” and “Doors” at the Visual Art Studio

Visual Art Studio has two new shows for this month’s First Fridays. Frist up, “Tape: The Dissection of Popular Culture” features a  Nickolai Walko’s pop culture-inspired pieces, all dissected through his medium of masking tape. Also on display will be “Doors of Le Castellet, Toulon, France” by Elaine Bankston, a new addition to her European Door Series.
