Boris are coming to DC’s 9:30 Club this weekend–and you could see them for free! This prolific Japanese metal/noise/prog/etc trio have been confounding expectations and experimenting with all sorts of different styles of music ever since they first showed up on the scene back in 1996. Not quite two decades later, the band have released nearly three dozen full-length albums, either on their own or in collaboration with other experimental music luminaries such as Merzbow and Sunn O))). Their latest release, Noise, demolishes expectations once again by being filled with melodic prog-rock songs that are the opposite of anything one would normally call “noise”–though they sure do use plenty of the heavy guitar and bass sounds that have been a common factor throughout almost all of their work. Check out the video for “Vanilla,” in which the band cranks out some raging biker-metal grooves–plus a really catchy chorus–in a room full of red fog:

Is this what their performance at the 9:30 Club will be like? I suppose that depends on how high your volume control is turned up… though, realistically, there’s no way your computer can hope to achieve the massive wall of sound Boris are capable of creating in a live environment. But will it rock, roll, rage, and rule like this video does? That, we can assure you, it will. From Takeshi’s trademark double-necked guitar/bass combo axe to Wata’s shred-tastic leads and Atsuo’s pounding beats, you can expect some serious pummeling from Boris once they take the stage. And with opening sets from gloomy Chicago post-metallers The Atlas Moth and Salt Lake’s violin-driven goth-doom sensations, SubRosa, this is guaranteed to be a great show from beginning to end. You don’t want to miss it!
