1708 Gallery will be celebrating its 35th birthday in style with 35 Candles, a joint celebration and art auction on March 29th.

1708 Gallery will be celebrating its 35th birthday in style with 35 Candles, a joint celebration and art auction on March 29th.

Admission starts at $100, and that includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres, valet, and the two most magical words that can be attached to an event: open bar.

Auctions will be both silent and live, and the event’s featured artist will be artist Kristin Baker.

“We invited Kristin Baker to be the honorary chair as we find her work relevant and engaging. She employs a smart and thoughtful process and at the same time her work has broad appeal,” said Emily Smith, Executive Director of 1708 Gallery. “She has been lovely to work with and very generous of her time and energy.”

Baker received her master’s in painting from Yale University, and Smith said that’ll lead the way for a variety of work available for auction.

“(The work will be) predominantly 2D – painting, photography, works on paper – with some 3D works,” said Smith. “The artists reflect a cross-section of working artists in Richmond and the work is diverse and appeals to a wide variety of interests.”

Smith said the atmosphere around the gallery has been busy as their big celebration approaches, and with good reason: 52 artists will be participating as of last month, and all the work will be available for viewing via tours as of this Sunday, March 16th.

You can order your admission or sponsorship package online on the event page (http://1708gallery.org/events/auction.php).

“The auction is a great way to build one’s collection and support one of the longest-running non-profit art spaces in the country, which in turn supports artists! Plus it is a great party,” Smith added.
