Coming from Buffalo, NY, where Aaron Mott had a small gallery, he’s bring a whole new sense of contemporary art to Carytown with Mott Gallery, which opens today. His gallery in Buffalo focused on being a space for students of the University of Buffalo to showcase their work. After he left Buffalo, his gallery was absorbed by the university.

Now, Mott plans to use the space for more than your average gallery. From Mott’s experience in Buffalo, he learned that art sales fluctuate frequently so he’s looking forward to having more consistency with his upcoming plans. Mott Gallery will feature monthly art openings with both local and national emerging and established artists.

“It’s kind of a large space, it’s 2,400 square feet so when we don’t have an opening, we have the room for event space,” Mott said. It would be great for birthday, anniversary, and company or organization events because there’s also plenty of space for catering.”

In just a couple weeks, Mott plans to sell Blanchard’s coffee with espresso and other coffee drinks along with basked goods. pastries and other baked goods from Williamsburg-based bakeries Kabbies Kake Studio, based in Williamsburg, will provide brownies, cupcakes, and cookies and Jamestown Pie Company will provide baklava. Locally, they’ll be some pastries available in the shop from Jean Jacques too.

Mott plans to start brewing up coffee and serving up the baked goods Aug. 24. For now, you can just go to enjoy the awesomee art openings that will be there.

For the grand opening, Mott Gallery will display work from 30-year neo-surrealism Richmond artist Frederick Chiriboga. His show, “Curiosity and Regret” will feature about 50 pieces of sculptures, paintings, and box constructions. The opening reception will last from 6 to 9 pm and that exhibit will be on display until Aug. 23.
