Artists from Richmond and beyond are preparing for September’s First Fridays on and around Broad Street with multiple exhibitions to be presented in Downtown’s Arts District. Richmond galleries, musical acts and theater performances are lined up to kick off this month in style.

Here are a few of our picks from this month’s roundup that we thought you should check out:

“Short, Fast & Furious” at the Coalition Theater

Summer is quickly coming to an end and I think we are all in need of a couple extra laughs this week to cope. Check out the Coalition Theater’s all-star improv cast at this month’s First Friday in their show “Short, Fast & Furious.” Tickets are available online.

Friends & Neighbors at Black Iris

Check out the Norwegian jazz band Friends & Neighbors in an energetic show at Black Iris as part of their Tiny Bar Series. The group’s lively “melodic free jazz style” results in a fresh take on a traditional musical style.

“Signal Flare” at Gallery5

Richmond muralist Mickael Broth presents his first solo exhibition at Gallery5 as part of this month’s First Friday. The opening on September 2 includes musical performances from White Laces, Chelsea Shag and California Death. We wrote about Broth’s new exhibit, “Signal Flare” earlier this week in an article that you can check out here.

“Sky Thing” at Quirk Gallery

New York artist Kimia Ferdowsi Kline presents her solo exhibit at Quirk Gallery in a collection of brightly colored paintings inspired by Persian animal fables. Check out the collection and see if you can find the connection between the paintings and the famous stories that have inspired some of the world’s most well known fables.

“Honest and Loyal” at Art 180

Art 180 presents their latest collaborative exhibition with the Students at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center with large-scale paintings looking at themes of mortality. The exhibition opens with an all-ages reception on September 2 from 6-9 p.m. as a part of First Friday’s Art Walk.

“Put This On!” at Endeavor RVA

Endeavor in-house artists as well as some local guest artists will present an exhibition of entirely wearable art, displaying limited edition shirts and merchandise. All items on display were either printed through local businesses or handmade by the artist. Friday’s event will also include musical performances from Ozark, Graymatter and Sam Brazil.

“Character Armor” at 1708 Gallery

Douglas Rieger explores the personalities of inanimate objects in his latest collection on display at 1708 Gallery through structures reminiscent of the shapes of the human body. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with a talk from the artist.

Visual Art Studio

Check out the openings of several exhibits at the Visual Art Studio with special events with the artists on display. At 6:30, Chris Semtner will hold an artist talk about his latest collection of insect and portrait paintings. Throughout the night, both Susan Hribernik and Elaine Bankston will hold meet and greets at their collections.

Visit First Fridays blog here to check out all of the events happening this weekend.

REVIEW | Ducking Awesome! WitchDuck Is Smart, Sharp, and Ruthless

I am rarely speechless, especially about theatre. Since I don’t get paid if I remain silent, I will make myself criticize a play I don’t feel I have any right to judge. Gotta pay the rent, and all that. I came into this performance of WitchDuck by Cadence and...

Richmond Had a General Strike and a First Friday on the Same Night

It was 72 and breezy. Unseasonably pleasant, almost chilly. VCU students were splayed out on picnic blankets in Monroe Park enjoying soft serve and the sunshine. Citronella and the smell of hot dogs wafted through the air from some folks having a cookout. “High...
