The weather looks like it’s going to give us another nasty weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy a little art. There are plenty of happenings, music, artist showcases, exhibits and other events going on at tonight’s First Fridays Artwalk.

The weather looks like it’s going to give us another nasty weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy a little art. There are plenty of happenings, music, artist showcases, exhibits and other events going on at tonight’s First Fridays Artwalk.

Here are a few picks from this month’s roundup that we thought you should check out:

Girls Rock! RVA at Gallery5

Girls Rock! RVA, a local organization which empowers young girls, transgender and non-conforming youth through music, art and activism, will hold a fundraiser tonight at Gallery5 for their annual summer musical camp. They will release a coloring book done by local sketch artist Jennifer Kennedy of 16 drawings of local female and trans musicians. Kennedy will also be live drawing the performers at the gallery who include Lady Gody, Lobo Marino, Christi, and Avers. Check out our story on the fundraiser here.

“Inside Out” by Suzanna Fields at Quirk Gallery

Fields is a RVA-based artist whose work has ranged from large site specific installations to sculptures comprised of only paint. Her current works consist of ink and acrylic abstractions panel on panel and synthetic paper.

Scarpa at Verdalina

Verdalina, a women’s clothing store downtown, and SCARPA, a Charlottesville-based women’s clothing and shoe store are teaming up this weekend for a pop-up event you don’t want to miss. An Airstream will be parked outside the shop, and of course you’ll want to pop inside to Verdalina to see what they have that’s new and beautiful for you! From 12-8 Friday and Saturday 11-4. 325 W. Broad St.

First Fridays at Mama J’s

Mama J’s has it all for their monthly First Fridays events and should definitely be one of your stops. There will be local artwork from Jay Bordeaux, live music from DJ Ron P, happy hour drinks and free apps. 6-9pm. 1st and Clay Sts.

“little BIG” at ART 180

“little BIG,” a selection of artwork from ART 180’s “The Really Big Show” (held on May 20,) will spotlight ART 180’s most recent projects in creative expression. Selected pieces represent ART 180’s spring programs at 12 sites throughout the Richmond area, with projects that explore positive self-expression, identity, teamwork and more. ART 180 will host an opening reception for the exhibition on Friday, June 3, from 6-9 p.m. The show will be on display at Atlas, ART 180’s art center for teens, through June 24.

If you’ve been reading these reviews for a while, you’ll notice I love me some context. Especially surrounding William Shakespeare’s plays. One of my favorite things about the existence of Richmond Shakespeare is that they’ve forced me to go back to the English Lit...

Review | ‘Come From Away’ is the Best We’ve Ever Been

Do you remember the rollerblading guy with the American flag kit on September 12th? We will never forget the 11th for the horrors, but do you remember the 12th? The 13th? If you do, I don’t even have to say which year. If you don’t, let me tell you a little bit about...

Before Richmond Was an Arts City, There Was Best Products

Imagine pulling into a suburban shopping center to buy a toaster and finding a department store that appeared to be falling apart with corners breaking away, walls peeling open like a giant cardboard box, or facades seemingly collapsing under their own weight. For...

Review | ‘I Love You Because’ Is Pure Joy 🏳️‍🌈

It could be said that Shakespeare invented the rom-com. It could also be said that Jane Austen improved it a couple of centuries later. Between the two of them, meet-cutes, notices of love or rejection arriving at exactly the wrong time, and breathless affirmations of...

Stay Hungry pt. 1 | Band on the Road

Editor's Note: Writer's Block is a space for Virginia writers to share personal essays, fiction, memoir, and works that fall somewhere in between. In Stay Hungry, Richmond local Eric Kalata looks back on a cross-country tour and the restless optimism of...

Local, Latino and A New Richmond Cosmos

Tucked into the alley behind 2512 West Main Street, a fever dream of the cosmos has taken shape across a brick wall. The mural is the collaborative work of four Latino artists working in and around Richmond: Visibly Hidden, Monolith, Mars, and Sol. A distant Earth...
