Internationally acclaimed artist Ester Partegàs has a show at VCU’s Anderson gallery. It runs through March 9th.

Ester Partegàs earned her MFA in sculpture from Universitat de Barcelona and her postgraduate degree in multimedia arts from Universität der Künste, Berlin. She has had a plethora of solo exhibitions, the most recent including Domus Artium 2 in Salamanca, Spain; Plaza de las Americas in New York, NY; Locker Plant, Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX; Lynden Sculpture Garden in Milwaukee, WI; among many more.

Partegàs has also been included in over 60 group shows. She has received many awards and grants for her work. Additionally, Partegàs has been published in a number of books, one of which will accompany her current exhibition in the Anderson Gallery: You Are Here by Ester Partegàs; designed by Alex Gifreu + Ester Partegàs, published by CRU, Figueres and Barcelona, Spain.

She currently resides here in Richmond, a long way from home in La Garriga, Barcelona. You may have seen Partegàs in the VCU Sculpture + Extended Media department, where she has been teaching since 2011.

The following is an excerpt about Ester Partegàs’ work from the Anderson Gallery website:

Ester Partegàs often addresses the most banal aspects of the urban landscape with a keen eye for telling details that otherwise would be overlooked or dismissed. Her earlier renditions of corporatized environments like an airport lounge or a mall atrium drew attention to their interchangeable aspects and the consequent quality of sameness that makes distinguishing one place from the next increasingly difficult. She explores the psychological dimensions of these indeterminate spaces, reflecting not only on how their anonymity can unmoor us, but also on the sense of wonder and possibility that can arise when considering anew the commonplace and discarded.
