The Lyceum Experience: Raw and Unleashed RVA Talent

The Working Artists’ Lyceum is a local art collective based here in Richmond. The collective was founded by Christine Skelly with the goal of revealing a seldom seen niche of artistic passion woven into the city. A “lyceum” is defined as a place for learning and sharing ideas, and the art collective is no different. “There is a need for artists to network,” says Skelly, and the Working Artists’ Lyceum is the collective for just that.

Many of the artists in the Working Artists’ Lyceum are established professionals in and around the city. “They are an integral part of the community,” Skelly says.

To showcase the wide spectrum of talent and style within the collective, the Working Artists’ Lyceum hosts warehouse art gallery events free and open to the public.

This Saturday, March 8, the Working Artists’ Lyceum will be hosting the Lyceum Experience—a warehouse art gallery show at 3300 West Clay Street from 7:00pm – 11:00pm. Skelly, the event coordinator, says the show will have “anything and everything to stimulate your senses.”

You can expect about 25 visual artists, as well as music, comedy, performance art, and more. All of the works entered into the show respond to a loose theme of creativity. Everyone is invited, especially those with an open mind and an appreciation for the arts. The event is meant to show all different art forms in a new and unconventional space for those who may not normally visit art galleries.

The show will be up all week after the opening. On Friday, March 14, there will be a closing show 7:00pm – 11:00pm for those not able to make it out to the show the first time.

“Art is everywhere,” says Skelly, “You experience art every time your eyelids part, so we put on these huge art shows to awaken the world—to live and experience art.”
