Gallery5 and the surrounding blocks of Jackson Ward became a portal to the past, where the clang of steel, the scent of woodsmoke, and the hum of lively conversation set the scene for the Richmond Renaissance Faire’s fundraising kickoff. Organized by Virago Alley in collaboration with The Richmond Moon Market, the event aimed to build support for a full-scale Renaissance Faire set to launch in 2026.
The evening was immersive from the start. Street performers and reenactors moved through the crowds, dressed in flowing cloaks and armor, while artisans demonstrated traditional crafts—blacksmithing, leatherwork, weaving, and pottery. The Richmond Moon Market curated a selection of vendors, offering handmade goods and herbal remedies, adding to the eclectic mix of old-world charm and local creativity.
For those seeking entertainment, the combat demonstrations delivered. Martial arts guilds and historical reenactors showcased duels and weapons training from various cultures, proving that the art of swordplay is alive and well in Richmond. Nearby, musicians played traditional tunes, providing a soundtrack to the bustling scene.
Of course, no Renaissance Faire—fundraiser or otherwise—would be complete without food. GWARBar, true to form, served up massive smoked turkey legs, a staple of any medieval-style gathering, while other local vendors offered everything from sweet treats to hearty fare fit for a wandering bard.
The event was more than just an evening of spectacle—it was a step toward something bigger. Organizers hope to create a Renaissance Faire that goes beyond the usual festival fare, incorporating diverse historical influences and a deep appreciation for the artistry of past centuries. The fundraiser was a success, but the effort isn’t over yet. The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $2,500 so far, but additional support is needed to cover costs for future events, permits, and performances.
For those who want to see Richmond host a Renaissance Faire of its own, donations can be made HERE. With continued support, this vision of history, craft, and community could become something truly special.
