Richmond’s independent radio voice, WRIR, will be celebrating Halloweek once again in their usual fashion–with an amazing evening of live music and scary costumes at The Camel. WRIR’s Sixth Annual Monster Mashquerade takes place on Friday, October 25 beginning at 9 PM. The bands performing will include several of Virginia’s most talented young independent groups, including the dark 80s new wave of Harrisonburg’s Mirror Kisses:

Also playing is 6 Track Amateur, the solo project of former Vindication frontman Myles Shifflett, and Myles brings his pop-punk songwriting chops and tongue-in-cheek sensibility to this group in a big way. He’s made videos for many of the group’s songs, which often take the form of miniature movies that expand on the idea behind the song quite a bit. Check out this clip for “Baby Eater Song”:

We’ve told you about Those Manic Seas before, and their crazy mannequin-with-TV-head lead singer is certainly a sight in a live environment. However, that’s not a good reason to ignore their excellent power-pop songs, which rock just as hard even without a real live human singing them. Check out this recent live performance of “That Manic Song,” from their latest EP, Headache/Heartache:

Rounding out the bill are The Shangri-Lords, a cover band made up of WRIR staff and their friends (or at least that’s the rumor), who will be rocking the crowd with a set of tunes by 60s girl groups such as The Supremes and The Ronettes. WRIR DJs Melissa and Ceci will be spinning tunes between sets, so that the dancing never has to stop. There will be prizes given for best costume and best mask, so go all out and look your best!

WRIR’s Monster Mashquerade kicks off at 9 PM on Friday, October 25 at The Camel, located at 1621 W. Broad St. Admission is a $5-10 donation to WRIR. For more info, check out the facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/529280093808978/

Every time I go to the Aldi on Arthur Ashe at Broad St., En Su Boca tries to seduce me with its tequila and tacos perfume. It doesn’t work all the time, but I feel the pull when I’m browsing the nonsense in Aldi’s middle aisle. I once bought sweatpants there. I’m not...
