Meet the New Neighbor: Salon Voss’s Glamorous Arrival in Richmond

by | Jan 3, 2023 | COMMUNITY, FASHION, NIGHTLIFE, QUEER RVA, RICHMOND NEWS, SMALL BUSINESS

Welcome to Salon Voss, a luxurious salon run by area director Tamara Lewis. Started in Fredericksburg, Salon Voss has been pampering clients for a whopping 7 years. Now, she’s bringing all their hair styling expertise to Richmond with a brand new location in Short Pump and Tamara is excited to make a splash in Richmond. We got a chance to ask her a few questions about the shop and what they do.

ed. note: We want to thank Tamara and Salon Voss for their support of the magazine!

Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today. To start off, can you introduce yourself and tell me a little bit about what you do?
Tamara Lewis: Hi! I’m from Salon Voss, Inc. We’re a hair salon that specializes in all sorts of hair care services, including coloring, styling, and microblading. This is our third location, and we’ve been established in Fredericksburg for over 7 years now.

How did you guys get into the self-care industry and why do you think it’s important?
We got into self-care because we want to help people feel good about themselves and their appearance. We think self-care is important because it’s not just about taking care of yourself for your own sake, it’s about being able to take care of others too. If you’re feeling confident and looking your best, it can really boost your mood and make a difference in your daily life.

Could you give us a bit of background on Salon Voss and how you got started in the self-care industry?
We’ve been in the self-care game for over 7 years at our Fredericksburg location and recently opened up a third location in Richmond. We wanted to bring our modern, trendy vibe to the city and offer top-notch services like cuts, color, balayage, and extensions. We even have our own line of hair extensions and a microblading service for natural-looking brows. Self-care is all about making people feel great in their own skin, and we’re all about that at Salon Voss.

That’s really cool. What made you and your team want to expand into Richmond?
We’ve always been drawn to Richmond and its vibe. We knew we would fit in perfectly and bring something special to the city. Opening our third location in Richmond just felt like the right move for us.

Could you give us an idea of the premier services that Salon Voss offers?
We offer a range of services using the most up-to-date techniques and trends, including cuts, color, balayage, and extensions. We even have our own hair extension line, which includes classic and seamless virgin tape-in extensions in a variety of colors, including rooted and balayage looks. We also offer microblading, which is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing that creates natural-looking brows using a specialized tool and pigment.

As we head into colder weather, what can people do to keep their hair healthy and frizz-free?
With the winter weather and dry forced air, it’s common for hair to become dry and frizzy. To combat this, it’s a good idea to take advantage of treatments at the salon or try a Brazilian Blowout Treatment, which can help provide smooth, frizz-free hair for up to 12 weeks. Remember, every person’s hair is unique, so we always consider that when recommending a treatment.

What’s the atmosphere like at Salon Voss? Do you have a favorite playlist?
Our salon has a trendy and modern vibe, and we have a 154″ video wall that plays a variety of music videos from all genres. We welcome everyone and pride ourselves on being a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community. No one will be judged or made to feel uncomfortable based on their orientation at Salon Voss.

I heard you have your own line of hair care products. Could you tell me more about them and why you decided to create them?
Yeah, we have our own brand called Tristan Taylor. I felt like there was a need for our guests to have access to quality, color-safe products at an affordable price. Tristan Taylor is actually the names of the owner’s children, so it was a fitting choice. We have shampoo and conditioner for different hair types, including a blonde shampoo that helps tone out unwanted tones. We also have a great styling line, including our most popular dry texture spray.

This isn’t your first salon. What’s your best advice for balancing work and family?
We definitely believe in balancing work and family. It can get tough at times, especially with long hours and opening a new location, but we try to make time for our families. We have a great team that makes it easier to sneak away for vacations or family date nights. It’s important to find a good balance so you can still function. We’re always adjusting and readjusting, and sometimes we don’t get to leave the salon until late at night and barely see our families. But when everything comes together, we make sure to sneak away for an extra vacation to make up for those times. Without our team, that wouldn’t be possible because we’re very involved owners. I remember when we first opened our first salon, we didn’t take a salary the first year and didn’t get to go on vacations or outings.

Most people are loyal to their stylist. With so many salons to choose from, what sets Salon Voss apart?
You’re right, there are a lot of salons out there. But we like to think we’re a cut above the rest. We pride ourselves on offering a top-notch experience for our guests. From the moment you walk in the door and see our modern, clean furniture and stations, to the friendly receptionist, we aim to make you feel comfortable and welcome. We offer detailed consultations, exceptional service, and professional recommendations to ensure you leave feeling great about yourself and your hair. Our stylists work as a team, so you can feel confident choosing any stylist you like, or consulting with multiple stylists within the salon. We even have occasions where two stylists work on one guest to really elevate the experience. Ultimately, we just want our guests to feel like they received exceptional service and care before tackling their day.

I have a friend who is looking for the best stylist for curly hair – do you have any recommendations?
Yeah, absolutely. We make sure to hire stylists who are well-rounded and can work with all types of hair. So, I can’t really recommend just one person because they’re all great with straight, curly, wavy, or textured hair. If you want to meet the stylist first, we recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation. That way you can meet the stylist and discuss your hair goals in more detail. And if you want to speak with another stylist within the salon, we can arrange that too. We work as a team here, so if one stylist thinks another one of our stylists would be a better fit for you, they’ll definitely let you know.
