BEHOLD! GWAR at The National, where the mere presence of Richmond’s intergalactic overlords feels like a gruesome embrace. Four decades of chaos and carnage—GWAR has become more than just a band; they’re the dark-hearted, unofficial mascot for the misfit masses of our city. Richmond’s landscape might be evolving, but knowing GWAR still slays in our midst is the comforting madness many of us cling to.

Our brave photographer, CJ Payne, was on hand, dodging gore to capture the spectacle of yet another near-sellout battle. Richmond, bask in the bloody glow of your hometown heroes.

All hail Oderus Urungus forever.

Photos | The Strokes at Allianz Amphitheatre

The Strokes are the most important rock band of the 21st century. In 2001, they changed the dial from grunge to garage, and singlehandedly sent every record label on a scavenger hunt for their sauce. If you weren’t around back then you might think I’m exaggerating....
