The fine folks over at Good Day RVA have another music video for your eyes and ears, and this go around we get not one, but two live performances of tunes from Richmond punk band Doll Baby. DIY filmmakers and founders of Good Day RVA Chris Damon and Evan Hoffman captured the four-piece at Virginia Center Commons mall with the help of Coldon Martin, Craig Zirpolo, Kate Rivara, Hugh Burruss, and Ashley Travis, along with sound by Tim Falen.
Doll Baby, raging out in the deserted Glen Allen mall, gives us a little new and little bit of the old, performing “Perfect Posture” off their latest EP, Hell Block, and “Drift” from their debut EP, Polliwog.
Filming inside the mall was a fun experience for the band according to drummer Dan Kelly, and perhaps for shoppers as well who probably left with busted eardrums. “The part of the mall we filmed in was basically abandoned,” he said. “The mall was open while we were shooting, and there were people walking around. People would kind of get close to us and then turn around and walk the other way. It was so loud! I’m sure people could hear it all the way on the other side of the mall.”
Between guitarist/vocalist Julie Storey’s killer and unique set of pipes on these tracks, and the 90s-esque nostalgic vibe the video gives off with its setting and the grungey, loud garage rock sound from the rest of the band, Good Day RVA’s creation makes me wish I actually had gone out for a shopping trip that day to catch a sneak peek at their live recording. And I’m one of the few girls in the world that hates to shop so that should entice you to give the video a couple plays.
I think my favorite part is the older guy at the end, just casually strolling by the band as they play their last chord going about his day like its the norm. Maybe it is, we will never know.
Back in October, we talked to Doll Baby, which is rounded out by guitarist Eric Kelly and bassist Jake Guralnik, about their new EP, which they released via Egghunt Records. The band will play a WRIR Benefit show at Gallery5 on March 31 and then will embark on a small tour in April with fellow Richmond band Opin. In May, they will head up to Montreal for Pouzza Fest with local punk band Bat Boy.
