Richmond, Will You Come Watch ‘Dirty Dancing’ with Us at The Byrd Theatre?

by | Sep 5, 2024 | COMMUNITY, FILM & TV, NIGHTLIFE, POP CULTURE

First off, a massive thank you to the over 1,000 people who have packed the Byrd Theatre for our ‘Summer of Swayze‘ series. Together, we’ve raised nearly $10,000 to help preserve one of the last true Grand Cinema Palaces left in the country. Now, as we head into the final chapter of our ‘Summer of Swayze’ series on Tuesday, it’s time to talk about Dirty Dancing—a movie as iconic as the man himself.

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” – Dance Instructor and All-Around Heartthrob, Johnny Castle.

On Tuesday, September 10th, we’re bringing Dirty Dancing to the big screen for the ultimate close to our summer celebration of all things Swayze. If Point Break was a roller-coaster ride of pure adrenaline, then Dirty Dancing is like the perfect summer slow dance, where every moment builds to that unforgettable lift that somehow makes all of life’s challenges fade into the background.

Get your tickets HERE and grab some Swayze merch HERE.

Let’s get real—Dirty Dancing is more than just another coming-of-age love story. Sure, it’s got all the hallmarks of a summer romance: Boy meets girl. Girl learns to dance. Forbidden love shakes up a stuffy resort. But it’s also a film about standing up to authority, about class divides, and about discovering who you really are—whether you’re in a rundown dance studio or in the middle of a wealthy Catskills resort. And at the heart of it all is Swayze’s Johnny Castle, the bad-boy dance instructor who turns rebellion into an art form, all while showing the world how to own the dance floor in the tightest black tank top ever seen on film.

The chemistry between Johnny and Baby (played by Jennifer Grey) is movie magic—just like the chemistry between Point Break’s Johnny Utah and Bodhi, but with a lot more mambo and a lot less bank robbing. The final dance scene, set to the classic “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” cemented Dirty Dancing in pop culture history.

So, if you’ve ever dreamed of nailing that lift or just want to relive one of the most iconic films in cinematic history, join us at the Byrd Theatre on Tuesday, September 10th at 7 pm for the final film in our ‘Summer of Swayze’ series. Grab your popcorn, a cold drink, and get ready for a night that will leave you feeling like you’ve had the time of your life!

All ticket proceeds go directly to the Byrd Theatre Foundation, helping to restore one of the last remaining Grand Cinema Palaces in the U.S.
