In the last few weeks Ellwood Thompson’s and Carytown Burger Lakeside have been sold (with the Carytown Burger in Carytown location up for sale) — those two brands hold a special spot in my Richmond heart.
You see, when RVA Magazine was just a baby, taking its first breaths in my row house on Floyd Ave, Ellwood Thompson was the first to stock our magazine, and the owners shared our passion for local culture and community. Sure, Ellwood’s has had its share of controversies over the years, but back in ’05? They were the real MVPs for funneling their resources to uplift not only small projects like us but a broad range of local initiatives and people. Forever grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Back then Carytown Burger was my go-to joint for those heavenly burgers. And it wasn’t just the food that was great; owner Mike Barber and his squad were a bunch of characters. There are more than a few stories I can’t tell in public. They also became one of RVA Magazine’s earliest supporters.
So, here’s my heartfelt note to ensure it’s on the record: Ellwood Thompson and Carytown Burger Lakeside, you are missed and immensely appreciated. I hope the new businesses that sprout in your place and all over town embody your commitment to local culture. Because it’s that local spirit that keeps people like me forever endeared, seeing you as more than just businesses, but as little cornerstones of our Richmond community.
