Last Wednesday at The Republic The Dream Machine kindled the crowd for The Santamaria Brothers, whose set was notably badass. It seems the brothers can play anything. They get away with Al Green, Hall & Oates, Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Sublime… Christ, they play everything. The best part about this band is that they play it all without effort. As brothers, I imagine all these songs just fell in stride over the years, and being naturally brilliant musicians they picked it all out by ear.

During their set, I was thinking that if I were taking a girl on a date and had my choice of local bands, The Santamaria Bros. would be the band I’d take her to see. There’s an informal, blithe candor to their set that makes the crowd feel cozy. Twins Gabe and Andres play bass and guitar in Soundstorm, one of Richmond’s most talented groups of young musicians. I have particular respect for this project because all members are part of larger bands, and they nonetheless acheive greatness in their smaller side project. Santamaria Brothers play often and all over the city–I’ll be checking them out again promptly.
Radio Rubber Room presents The Dream Machine and special guests Cooker this Wednesday, May 6, at The Republic. Cooker consists of Tommy Booker and Raphael Katchinoff, two of Richmond’s best and busiest musicians. Both play in The Southern Belles and the People’s Blues of Richmond, and Raphael is also in The Milkstains. Personally I’ve never heard this hybrid side project, but these two guys freaking rock, so I’m naturally antsy for this show. In fact, these two are so busy that if you miss Cooker on Wednesday, lord knows when you’ll get a chance to hear them again. So, come 10pm, I trust everyone will be at The Republic.
