Hearken once more to the call! Wednesday nights at The Republic return. This week, Radio Rubber Room is kind enough to present us with an encore Splendid Suns performance, coupled of course with The Dream Machine. The Suns have been busy lately – they’re currently working on their debut full length album, projected for release late this year. After hearing such impressive live shows, I’m anxious to hear what these young talents stir up in the studio. They’re dynamic, inventive, and chock full of ability; I don’t think a lacking album is in the equation.

Last time, we saw the hybrid duo Santadice put the crowd in a pulsing dance-off. The nature of Santadice is a rarity – a drummer (J3’s Joshua Santamaria) plays in sync to the beats of a DJ (Phil Dice). Anyone who has ever attempted it knows how hard it is to play drums in time with a machine. Somehow I’m not surprised that a Santamaria brother is able to pull this off. In the late hours of the evening, DJ Phil Dice’s mix-ups of “Bad,” “Le Freak,” and “Funkytown” kept the crowd where it needed to be – on the floor. Keep an eye out for Santadice, they’re another one of Richmond’s uncommon sightings you don’t want to miss.

Beginning this week, Radio Rubber Room will provide high-quality live recordings of shows at The Republic. Soon you’ll be able to hear bits and pieces of these crucial nights online. Get loud and crazy as the rock commences this Wednesday at The Republic with The Dream Machine and Splendid Suns. 10pm! Be there.

There’s a Murder Coming to Richmond, and You’re Stuck on the Train

Virginia Repertory Theatre is kicking off its new season the way any sensible theatre should: with a train, a murder, and a detective who’s just trying to make sense of it all. Murder on the Orient Express is Agatha Christie’s great reminder that people are both awful...

Confederate Nostalgia, Black Voices: The Paradox of Polk Miller

The Felon Who Built Scott’s Addition

Before the beer taps and condos, before the buzzwords about ‘revitalization,’ Scott’s Addition’s future passed through the hands of a single man: Justin Glynn French. A convicted felon whose empire collapsed in scandal, he set the stage, even if unintentionally, for...

It’s Still Our City | Ep. 13 Stooping RVA

"The joy of finding a perfectly reusable gem on a sidewalk, in an alley, or on a porch stoop is one of the perks of living in such close proximity in the city of Richmond. The FOMO of not making it on your bike in time for a taxidermy dolphin or a surprisingly decent...
