Last Wednesday at The Republic, Radio Rubber Room gave us The Dream Machine and The Mystery Ship – a fitting pairing of rock and punkadelia. TDM was on point as usual, and I heard a handul of surprisingly apt harmonica riffs from Yerbian Matt Tremontada – I didn’t even know the kid could play! I noticed something different about Justin Shear’s soloing that night, as he played with a supremely strong hand, not so much dancing around the frets, but digging into them. He owned every solo – had ’em right there in his pocket. I’m looking forward to hearing TDM’s new drummer and bassist in the coming weeks, as much as I’ve relished in hearing Gabe Santamaria tear shit up on bass.
The Mystery Ship, adequately self-described as punkadelia, offered a really impressive live show. There’s something inherently punk about their straightforward, raw 60s sound. I love the form and simplicity of The Mystery Ship’s style, and I fervently share their sentiment for the “destruction of dribble”. Three guitars manage to maintain a cohesive wall of sound, never coming across as overbearing, but bright and energetic. Lead singer Louis Reichbauer has a solid middle range voice, giving all his screams an inimitable straining punch. Keep an eyeball peeled for The Mystery Ship and check their tunes out online.
Coming this Wednesday, June 27 at The Republic, Radio Rubber Room presents The Dream Machine and an intriguing hybrid concoction known as SantaDice. The latter is partly constituted of DJ Phil Dice and Josh Santamaria of giLL and the J3 Project. I have no idea what to expect, so I’m just going to go ahead and set my mind to blown. Lord only knows where this Wednesday will take us; last week I found myself on a rope swing at 5am after the show. I’m keeping my options open, but I’ll sure as hell be at The Republic at 10pm.
