Counting Crows brought their signature blend of alt-rock nostalgia and emotional resonance to Richmond’s new Allianz Amphitheater this past weekend, playing to a packed crowd under clear summer skies.
The night kicked off with The Gaslight Anthem, opened the evening with a 45-minute set that included fan favorites like “The ’59 Sound” and “American Slang,” earning a strong response from early arrivals. By the time Counting Crows took the stage, the amphitheater was full and buzzing. Frontman Adam Duritz led the band through a set that spanned decades, from August and Everything After to more recent releases, with the crowd singing along to hits like “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “A Long December.”
Photographer Joey Wharton was on hand.
For Those Who Don’t Know: Counting Crows’ Legacy
Formed in the early 1990s in Berkeley, California, Counting Crows found fame with their debut album August and Everything After, a multi-platinum release that helped define the alternative rock sound of the decade. Known for their heartfelt lyrics and dynamic live shows, the band has maintained a loyal following across generations. Saturday’s performance showed that time hasn’t dulled their emotional reach—or their ability to fill a venue.
