The Byrd Theatre Foundation recently decided to re-launch their midnight movies…this time with beer.

The Byrd Theatre Foundation recently decided to re-launch their midnight movies…this time with beer. The series, called ‘Byrd and Beers,’ helps fundraise for the historic theater in the hopes of restoring it to its former glory.

The theme of the movie series is ‘Cult Classics’ and the beer offered comes from Center of the Universe, also in partnership with XL102. The series had a trial run in December with Bad Santa, which wasn’t the best turnout with only 79 attendees. But, last month, on February 20th, the Goonies showed with over 500 attendees and $3,800 in revenue of ticket and beer sales.

“We actually had to turn some people away at the door for goonies because we were at capacity for what we were expecting,” said Grant Mizell, Vice President and Marketing Co-Chair of the Byrd Foundation

On Friday, March 20th, ‘cult classic’ Fight Club will be premiering at 11:59 ‘midnight.’

Doors open at 11:30 and tickets are available now for $5. Beer will be offered by Center of the Universe, their Chin Music Lager and Ray Ray’s Pale Ale in cans for $5.

The previous midnight movie series was held on Saturdays and did not include beer. Now it’s on Fridays and has introduced beer to the event.

How often can you go to a theatre that’s not Cinebistro and drink a few beers?

“We have a standard special event license, each month,” said Mizell, as to how the theatre is allowed to sell booze at the events.

April’s ‘Byrd and Beer’ event after will be a ‘fan choice’ movie that will premiere on April 24th. The polls are open now and have almost reached 1,500 votes. Here are the top choices so far:

Pulp Fiction 231 17%

Breakfast Club 204 15%

Dazed and Confused 142 10%

Army of Darkness 135 10%

The other movies on the list are: From Dusk til Dawn, the Hangover, Donnie Darko, Escape from New York, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

“Probably my favorite one out of those is Donnie Darko, I’ve always enjoyed that movie. Close second with Pulp Fiction,” said Bruce Ray, co-founder of Center of the universe brewing.

But for right now, let’s get our Ray Ray’s pale ale and Edward Norton fix.
