Are you a local homebrewer that’s got an amazing ale or the perfect recipe for a pumpkin beer just hanging around your house?
Are you a local homebrewer that’s got an amazing ale or the perfect recipe for a pumpkin beer just hanging around your house? Well if so, Southern Season wants to taste it!
The local gourmet grocery store will host its second annual Homebrew Competition and Beer Extravaganza on Sat., Nov. 7. Southern Season’s Beer Extravaganza will feature brewers, vendors and several breweries including Founders Brewing, Epic Brewing, Starr Hill, DC Brau, Roanoke Valley Wine Company, Duclaw, Blue Bee Cider and Center of the Universe, to celebrate the annual home brew competition.
With the craft beer boom here, homebrewing is also been growing in popularity over the years. Elizabeth Cooper, the Advanced Sommelier CMS at Southern Season said Southern Season wanted to be able to give local consumers as well as breweries a chance to show the recipes they’ve been working on.
“The craft brew movement and home brew movement is one of the fastest growing categories in the beverage industries,” said Cooper. “We wanted to give our customers an opportunity to showcase their talents in a fun and festive environment – it is also the chance for our local breweries to showcase their products as well as national breweries.”
There are three categories: lager, ale, and fruit/vegetable with hundreds of style options within those categories. Cooper said people can submit as many beers as they want.
The weekend’s contest will be judged by professional brewers and individuals from the Beer Judge Certification Program, a non-profit organization. There will be a $100 prize for the best beer recipe in each category, $50 for second best, $25 for the third and $200 for the best overall beer.
The deadline to submit your brews is Tues., Nov. 2. Get your application here. The Beer Extravaganza will go from 1 to 4 pm and tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door. Attendees will receive a commemorative glass for sampling the beers from the breweries. Winners of the home brew competition will be announced at 4 pm.
