Here’s a Valentine’s Day present for local music fans: a succinct new song from folk rock duo The Tide Rose in the spirit of love. “Wanna Be Yours” is a playful, yet cautious song detailing feelings of new and unrequited love, and the tender secrecy that naturally follows.
“For me, the song was inspired by that feeling of wanting something to happen, but not wanting to let on,” vocalist Whitney Caroline remarks. “When you’re waiting for a phone call and then it comes, sometimes you just want to play it cool, you know? Even if nothing about how you feel is ‘subtle.'”
On the song (described as an “almost love song”), Caroline and her musical partner Kelian Creech trade verses detailing these feelings, on top of music that gracefully moves from rustic guitar plucking to swaying strumming propped up by a delicately understated rhythm section. At the end, the two come together in a series of serene harmonies concluding the song with inspired hope much like the feeling of new love.
Recorded in Nashville in 2016, this song is the first new music to be released from the duo since their sparkling self-titled debut in November of 2015. It will be part of an six-song EP the duo is currently working on, one with a release date unknown at this time.
Though that project is still underway, the two felt the time was right to release this song. “It’s a short & sweet unrequited-love song that seemed fitting for Valentine’s Day,” Caroline remarks with a smile.
Enjoy the song below and catch the duo at their next performance in town on March 3rd at Ashland Coffee & Tea.
