French record label Cooler Than Cucumbers released Salade de Concombres Vol. 1 this week, a free compilation available for download here. It features a massive track list of 34 songs from rap artists all over the world. There are plenty of varying styles and moods here, from dark and crunchy electronic landscapes to pop songs written with vocal melody in mind, and with raps ranging from high-velocity chops to emotive folk poet chew to what could very well be described as clever talking arrangements. The comp provides a telescope-like view into the world of underground hip hop, covering ground from Japan to Portugal with a quick stop right here in Richmond, VA.
Local rapper Swordplay and London-based James P Honey perform “Ant Eats Anteater” over a beat made by French producer Pierre the Motionless. Other contributing artists whose names may sound familiar include Ceschi, MC Homeless, Riddlore, Brzowski, Nomar Slevik, and Ira Lee, but this list really does injustice to all the pleasant surprises found in between. If you like beats and you like lots of words, then Cooler than Cucumbers has made sure that there is something here for you.
