Dare to Hear Different: Experimental Music Hits ICA

by | Dec 5, 2024 | ART, ELECTRONIC & EXPERIMENTAL, MUSEUM & GALLERY NEWS, PERFORMING ARTS

The No Input series continues at the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at VCU on Friday, December 13, with an evening of experimental performances curated by longtime DIY promoter and noise musician Alex Capraro. Featuring New York’s Sunk Heaven and Richmond’s Three-Brained Robot, this free event offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of experimental music and performance art.

No Input is the brainchild of Emilie (Mimi) Luse, the ICA’s head of program production, who designed the series to highlight Richmond’s underground music scene and its innovative programmers. Luse describes the concept as a way to showcase the work of local music promoters who have been “doing so much with so little” in unconventional spaces, like basements and studios. The series entrusts these programmers to curate performances that transform the ICA’s unique architecture into an extension of their creative vision.

Promoter Alex Capraro

For the December 13 event, Capraro, co-founder of the now-shuttered OSB venue and a longtime figure in the Richmond DIY scene, brings together two acts: Sunk Heaven, a New York-based band known for their visceral noise-driven performances, and Richmond’s Three-Brained Robot, a performance artist renowned for their theatricality, props, and costuming. According to the press release, audiences can expect “theatricality, props, sets, homemade instruments, puppetry, and costuming,” as well as a dose of unpredictability and creativity.

The title No Input references the sound mixing technique where feedback loops create unique soundscapes without external sources. It also metaphorically represents the insular, self-sustaining nature of local music communities that create distinct regional styles.
