Local noise rock duo Navi “not a band anymore”

The local drum and guitar duo Navi have taken to facebook to say they’re no longer a band – what that means, we’re still working on.

Jon Hawkins (Guitar) and Kyle Flanagan (Drums) make up the simple but heavy and dynamic duo loveinly known as Navi.

The two have demolished house shows and venues alike since early 2012, becoming a go-to opener for more experimental acts when they come through town.

A facebook post shared today lead fans to cry a resounding “NOOOOOOOOO!”

So we're not a band anymore. Thanks to everyone who ever gave a shit. Peace.

The folks at Goodday RVA recently shot a live video of Navi at the old Have a Nice Day Cafe space and it is one for the history books – if Navi have called it quit, they couldn’t have picked a higher note to end it on:

The 9.5 minute recording shows off a lot of what the band was known for – high energy raucous performances with catch head banging riffs and beats.

Before I was with RVAMag I caught them at… I donno, some venue – I think Galery 5 opening for Lightning Bolt… the show was sick:

And Richmond’s most beloved taper Silver Persinger has a great collection of live Navi clips as well:

You can check out all their tracks over on their Bandcamp page – its pay what you want, but try and not be a dick about it.

And it looks like this could break up could be for real…

No words on if they ever plan to release the stems of their work for remixes either – that might make an interesting tool for some local rappers to get into…

This whole post might seem dramatic, but Navi was (is) a great sound coming out of Richmond right now – there will be a mighty void to fill (and opening slots at shows) if they truly stop making music.

I hope we get some kind of roof-top-send-off show with a burning couch or something before they really leave town.

Opinion | Richmond, We Don’t Need Another Love Song

Music has always been a mirror. It tells us who we are, what we value, and, sometimes, what we’re too afraid to face. But if music is supposed to reflect the world around us, then what does it say that so much of today’s mainstream music says… nothing at all? Richmond...
