Mark Lanegan brings his spooky blues-grunge to U Street Music Hall Sunday (Ticket giveaway!)

by | Nov 5, 2014 | MUSIC

Have you been keeping up with Mark Lanegan lately? If not, you should be–between multiple solo albums, full-length collaborations with Duke Garwood and Isobel Campbell, a Queens Of The Stone Age album, his work with Soulsavers, and even an archival album of unreleased Screaming Trees recordings, he’s appeared on close to a dozen albums in the past five years. Now he’s on tour for his latest album with the Mark Lanegan Band, Phantom Radio, released last month on Vagrant Records. That tour will bring him to the U Street Music Hall in Washington DC this Sunday, and you could see the show for free!

Phantom Radio is not necessarily the kind of dark, despondent blues we’ve come to expect from Lanegan in recent years; first single “Sad Lover” certainly has the appropriate sort of title and lyrical content (“I hate when that red sun goes down”), but it’s actually a driving tune with hypnotic keyboard drones and a propulsive snare beat keeping it moving ever forward. See for yourself by watching the video below:

Regardless of how relatively energetic Lanegan may be feeling these days, though, rest assured that he’s still tapped into the deep blues that has sustained his career from day one. Electronic textures may show his range and depth of influence, but his smoky baritone remains the same, and its soulful air of hard-won wisdom is as present as ever, reminding you why you loved Mark Lanegan’s music in the first place. So do yourself a favor and make it up to DC this Sunday night–it’s bound to move you.
