Mathew Roth’s ‘The Vulture & The Sparrow’ offers return to minimal, orchestral post-rock

Remember post-rock when it was just 14 strings and 36 guys yelling on stage? Those were good times. And Ithaca, NY’s Mathew Roth is offering a return to part of that experience with his new release due out next week.

Remember post-rock when it was just 14 strings and 36 guys yelling on stage? Those were good times. And Ithaca, NY’s Mathew Roth is offering a return to part of that experience with his new release due out next week.

The Vulture & The Sparrow landed in our inbox (yes, we check most of your random press e-mails) and while we’re not gonna spend too much time talking about it, but check out Roth’s “An Overture of Ice” below:

It lacks the army of people screaming, but I dig the simplicity and beauty of the recording. And check out the image Roth uses for his Bandcamp page is a boat on fire in the middle of a raging sea (top image). What’s more post rock then that?!

As for background, Roth is a classical composer with a focus on piano, violin and cello (obviously). As with most instrumental post-rock releases there’s a story in there – “a musical journey through the darkness and back out to the light” – either way, I’m digging the record on this very hot and miserable Monday.

Enjoy, but try not to let it get you down too hard.
