Five local bands are headed to Axton, Va.

Five local bands are headed to Axton, Va. tonight to play at the seventh annual Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival, a charity fundraiser that takes place every Memorial Day weekend to promote music, arts and education for the area.

RVA favorites The Shack Band, The Southern Belles, People’s Blues of Richmond, The Congress and Mighty Joshua are among the 40 bands the festival has scheduled to play.

Other big names on the roster include the Yonder Mountain String Band and Big Something who will grace this up and coming festival’s five stages.

The four-day festival, which launched in 2009, drew roughly 3,500 people last year and features on-site camping, arts, crafts, food and children’s activities. It donates proceeds to local and regional charities in the Martinsville area.

In the past six years, Rooster Walk Inc. has donated more than $70,000.

Rooster Walk was created in memory of, Edwin “the Rooster” Penn and Walker Shank, two Martinsville natives who passed away while still in their 20s. Penn and Shank are childhood friends of co-founders Johnny Buck and William Baptist. According to the website, the two loved Martinsville, music and the outdoors, and the founders felt a music festival would be a perfect tribute.

Rooster Walk 7 will take place May 21-24 at Pop’s Farm located at 675 Hobson Road in Axton, Va. Tickets are $20-$150. Grab yours here.
