RVA musician Pete Curry drops new video about love and Winona Ryder

Somewhere between Ty Segall and Lou Reed sits RVA’s Pete Curry. With jangly guitar riffs and droning vocals, Curry offers a unique-twist on the fuzz-pop genre and his new video for “1998” reflects that… as well as a love for Winona Ryder.

“Winona Ryder was someone I was really fond of when I was younger,” said Curry in an interview with RVAMag. “I hadn’t really thought about her in a while, that’s why I put her in the video. The song is about someone I was fond of when I was younger [Joanna].”

“1998,” according to Curry, tells the true story of love lost some time ago. He was really in love with his best friend’s girlfriend, her name really was Joanna.

“It’s about how this infatuation with a person or thing does something weird to your head,” he said about the track. “It was me reflecting on older feelings and nostalgia itself and how that puts me where I am now. ‘Where did I go wrong? What happened to me?’”

The Winona Ryder montage featured in the video is actually something he snagged from youtube some time ago but hadn’t gotten the chance to use yet. He’d been thinking about a way to visualize the track for some time, and when the idea to juxtapose his celebrity crush with his real life crush, it all clicked.

“I went ahead and made it at my house one Saturday evening, and that’s what it turned out to be,” he said. The process was simple enough; he pinned a sheet up in his kitchen and just started dancing around. The final product is a slightly psychedelic/slightly creepy ode to what could have been.

But don’t think the decision to release such a personal song was easy; “When I was having the record pressed I laid awake many nights thinking ‘oh god, my friends from home are gonna hear this!'” he said, considering if his old best friend would hear the track and come calling.

“1998” was released as part of his October 2015 album Advice on Love via his new label Crystal Pistol Records, which he launched with bandmate Justin Black, who plays bass in his live band.

And if you enjoyed this track, or Curry in general, make sure you head on out to Hardywood this Friday where he’ll perform along side Moonlight Beach Club and Ben Shepherd
