Sound Check! Bone Machine, Benjamin Shepherd, Nicotine Dolls

by | Jan 23, 2025 | AMERICANA & BLUES, DOWNTOWN RVA, ELECTRONIC & EXPERIMENTAL, METAL, PUNK, THRASH & HARDCORE, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, REGGAE & JAM, ROCK & INDIE

Sometimes the world feels bleak. Right now, in my eyes, the world looks bleak. I went to think about it, take stock of what puts gas in my tank, and did my pondering at The Camel, at Gallery 5, at Bandito’s. After all that, I didn’t feel so bad.

Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com

Bone Machine, Charm Offensive, Box Factory

Goodbye, my sweet prince, Bone Machine.. This is the final show for the iconic local psych rockers. They have truly taken a special place in my heart, with an unending stream of catchy tunes entwined in intricate and delicious grooves. They are going out with a bang, with their recent release, Nervous Friction“, being my all-time favorite track in their discography. Let us pour one out for our dearest, Bone Machine.

They are being sent off with two power players in the scene: Charm Offensive and Box Factory.

Charm Offensive is a heavy sort of shoegaze quartet with ethereal vocals. There is something otherworldly about them, which seems very fitting for the occasion. It almost feels like a spacey or even angelic chorus of distortion to serenade the send-off.

Box Factory is a wild mob of psychedelia, with two drummers seated opposite each other like gargoyles flanking a cathedral. Their sound is so thick and rich; every time I see them, it seems to be layered in a new sheet of gold and red.

Nicotine Dolls, Abbie Roper

Nicotine Dolls are making their way down from NYC to little ol’ RVA. I was immediately drawn in by the powerful vocals of frontman Sam Cieri. His vocal performances are paired with fittingly powerful lyrics, exploring the complexities of modern relationships and an ever-confusing world.

Joining them is Abbie Roper, bringing some really fun indie rock out of NYC. Abbie was clearly raised on all the modern classics—The Strokes, Bully, and the like. Her discography strikes a great balance between harder bangers and softer, more comforting tracks.

On the 17th, we got the newest Benjamin Shepherd album. This acoustic guitar/harmonica/vocal release feels especially timely after my recent viewing of the Bob Dylan movie. Shepherd has an incredibly relatable style of lyricism. The first track, “So Far to Go, delves into youthful rebellion, racial injustice at the hands of police, and the waning energy that comes with each hard day. I found it to be quite special. I want to give this whole album some seriously focused listens—I can already see all sorts of lyrical precious stones waiting to reveal their dusty, shiny surfaces, and in turn, their blinding beauty. (Lyrics available on Bandcamp.)

Cal Folger Day has one of the most unique sounds I’ve come across in quite a while. My initial thought is that it’s somewhere between Sgt. Pepper’s, Sinéad O’Connor, and Goat Girl—a truly insane combination that I am absolutely into.

Julie Story, a member of the local group Doll Baby, who put out a truly beautiful tune to raise money for Gaza last summer. It’s a haunting and mesmerizing track that I highly recommend giving a few listens—and, if you can, a few dollars. While I couldn’t find solo music from Julie, if her other work with Doll Baby is any indication, it will be powerful and meaningful.

Tracks We’re Spinning

‘The Eclipse’ by Zack Cross
It’s not often that original classical music slides across my desk, but today, the mysterious manila envelope held “The Eclipse” by Zack Cross.

It’s a beautiful piece, led by a very vocal piano. From my limited knowledge of this style, I would guess it’s a romantic piece, conjuring vivid visions of nature and the wild that manifest in your mind with each calculated key press.

“Fever Dream” by Arden Woolf
“Fever Dream” is Arden Woolf’s first single, and wow, they hit it out of the park right off the bat.

The single debuted alongside an excellent music video that expands on the witchy themes fluttering around this tune like stark bats. My initial thought was that it sonically reminded me of early Lorde, but this track reveals more edges and faces than you’d expect. A hell of a first release.

“Prison Song” by Shagwüf, feat. Whyse Legion
This Bandcamp-only release by RVA’s favorites, Shagwüf, is a goddamn masterpiece.

It has that classic Shag funky, rocky sound but with a razor-sharp edge. You’re hooked instantly, pulled into a hypnotic, rock-induced trance, and then Whyse Legion comes in on the chorus, burning down every institution meant to hold the working man down.

In a time that feels bleak—bleaker by the minute—music like this is an adrenaline shot to the heart. So, get back out there and make it happen.
