Sound Check! Bright Eyes! Hovvdy! Richmond Renaissance Fair! & More!

by | Mar 5, 2025 | AMERICANA & BLUES, DOWNTOWN RVA, ELECTRONIC & EXPERIMENTAL, HIP HOP & RAP, METAL, PUNK, THRASH & HARDCORE, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, QUEER RVA, RHYTHM & SOUL, ROCK & INDIE

I am very grateful for this job, purely for the amount of new music I become aware of. This week, we got some softer stuff that I normally would not have been hip to, but now it’s going into regular rotation.

If you’ve got any tips, send them my way. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Bright Eyes, Merce Lemon

Bright Eyes has been a titan in the modern mythology of indie songwriting. They are equal parts influenced by John Prine, Fugazi, and Elliott Smith. There is something so American, and specifically Midwestern, about an acoustic guitar and a sad voice sitting in that upper window, looking out over God-knows-what. Turn on Bright Eyes and stare at your wall—you may just find yourself looking out over that same vast American expanse, humming the words you don’t know.

The modern alternative-style country wave turns tidal. Merce Lemon is surfing these tunes with a Western slide sound but hailing from PA. I think if you like the slower Bucko tracks, you can get into this sound very easily.

Hovvdy, Video Age

Hovvdy (pronounced “howdy”) is an ideal soundtrack for those early steps of the year, lounging on the front porch. You watch cars glide by, heading to the mountains and the beach, while a gentle voice floats across from your speaker. Hovvdy has all the familiarity of a new Southern spring. They sit at the country end of that currently unfolding scale of country-alternative (MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee).

Video Age is a quirky lot. They kinda have a Talking Heads thing going on—an overall very new wave approach. They are just as welcoming as Hovvdy, taking you out to somewhere pretty and broad to enjoy wide-open space and light.

Richmond Renaissance Fair poster by Mended Arrow

A bit different than my usual shuffle, but if you’re feeling mystical, there will be live medieval madrigals at Gallery5 as a fundraiser for the new Richmond Renaissance Fair. Safe to say you won’t see this at any bumping house show. This is a truly unique deal, and it’s looking like the whole event will be a blast.

NEW TUNES

Gutter by Bucko

This has been a shining figure in the Bucko set for a while, and it is finally in our hands. “Gutter is absolutely mesmerizing, and the lyrics reflect that, with references to spinning merry-go-rounds and the swapping chorus of “I want to be with you” and “I want to forget you.” The song revolves around a looping guitar riff accented by a smooth, drawn cello. Just as you’re floating a few inches off the ground, the drums kick in like cannons, and Cole’s voice rises above like Boudica leading the mobs. Another certified Bucko classic.

Tidal Wave by Box Factory

The psychedelic psychos are back with another smooth escape. You can really feel the drive behind their impressive rhythm section—it gives the song that titular wave feel. They’re also working with some really dreamy synths that you can just lay down and sunbathe in.

Opinion | Richmond, We Don’t Need Another Love Song

Music has always been a mirror. It tells us who we are, what we value, and, sometimes, what we’re too afraid to face. But if music is supposed to reflect the world around us, then what does it say that so much of today’s mainstream music says… nothing at all? Richmond...
