I love finding a wild card for this column. This week we have one of my favorite sings of my youth, a lovely collection of locals, and a little harp because I have free will and so do you.
Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.
FRIDAY CHEERS! Chaparelle, The Jack Wharff Band
friday, May 2nd, 2025
Brown’s Island
It’s indie, it’s western, it’s smooth—and it’s in. Chaparelle, the collaboration between Zella Day, Jesse Woods, and Beau Bedford, is taking over Brown’s Island. You’re going to want to bring someone to dance with at this show—you’ll be dancing real close. These songs carry all the thrill of dangerous country tales but with an animated quality that adds an unmatched kind of spark.
If you’re on the fence and need a track to tip you toward a ticket, listen to “Inside the Lines.”
The Jack Wharff Band will be kicking off the night. There’s something beautiful about a local group playing a massive show like this. The band met at a local open mic and has seen a sharp rise since—boasting an impressive quarter of a million monthly listeners as of now.
Let’s give them a few more on that lovely, slow drive home from what’s bound to be an unforgettable night.
Frank Turner, Dave Hause, Katacombs
Tuesday, may 6th 2025
Canal Club
I’ve been in love with Frank Turner’s songwriting since I was about 14 and first got caught in his blend of folk, punk, and druidic storytelling. It’s so easy to immerse yourself—you become a character, winning wars and facing unimaginable heartache. There’s a real power you can draw from that.
I’m personally hoping Mr. Turner plays “Long Live the Queen,” a horrifically sad and beautiful tale of experiencing the final days of a dying loved one. That song has rattled around in my head for years, painting vividly colored cave art in the valleys between my ears.
Dave Hause is coming down the road from Philly, bringing a similar drive and passion. This is real “on the road” music—something to carry you through a late-night drive when you need to belt out some vocals just to stay awake.
Coming from a few different places, both culturally and inspirationally, Katacombs is smooth and goes down easy. The vocals explore the space like they’re searching for buried treasure, leaving no stone unturned.
Pirana Rama, Young Scum, George
Saturday, May 3rd, 2025
Gallery5
I love seeing a stage absolutely packed to the gills with the multitude that is Pirana Rama. They have such a comforting sound—full of life, freedom, and light. The dual vocals they feature work in a great contrast: soothing one moment, searing the next.
This show is also dropping a special run of t-shirts, so snag one while you can and prove you were there.
Let’s get some jangly guitar in the conversation. No better way to go about it than with Young Scum. They’ve got all the sweet bounce of The Smiths, paired with the knowing, easygoing voice of Mac DeMarco. Their music reminds me of the film Submarine—an outsider learning all about life, driven by a desire to see it all.
George rounds out the lineup perfectly with a grittier, garage approach, but the same undeniable danceability. They remind me a little of Nikki and the Corvettes—which I say with nothing but praise.
Greenstrings Harp Ensemble
Sunday, may 4th, 2025
st. Johns Church
If you’re feeling a little matinee, the Greenstrings Harp Ensemble will be playing a variety of tunes at their “May the 4th Be With You” celebration. As the name suggests, they’ll be covering all the Star Wars classics that the last few generations have grown up with.
Expect a few traditional pieces, maybe some Broadway bangers, and even a few contemporary hits. (Harp cover of “WAP” when?) You really don’t see this kind of thing too often—so why not make a day of it?

NEW TUNES
Six Shooter by Chupaskabra
I REFUSE to hear any ska slander in my home. These guys rip, and kick this song down like a cowboy kicks open saloon doors. This song has madness written all over it and is so incredibly fun. Ska revival when? The production is great on this track, with a really catching bell characterizing important moments throughout the song. May ska never die.
Echo, Echo, Echo by Sheetrock
Smooth, smooth horn. The new sheetrock keeps it going, playing with tempo, dynamics, and instrumentation in a masterful way. The horn section provides a perfect canvas to paint on strings and vocals, smearing blues, purples, and hints of gold behind your eyelids.
