Friday Cheers | Dogpark, Weekend Plans, Caroline Vain
Friday, May 23rd, 2025
Brown’s Island

NYC’s Dogpark is rocking Friday Cheers. They’re pumping out Strokes-inspired rock with poppy hooks. The vocals are impressive and grand, with the rest of the band creating a steady drive forward. “Breaking in Brooklyn” is my favorite track of theirs—a heartfelt progression, compelling vocals, and sheer, sheer honesty.

Locals up! Weekend Plans are a groovy masterpiece. This eight-piece is on a late-night train in the dance car with all the energy in the world. Some bands bounce off of each other, but in this case, each instrument is driving forward in the same direction, flying toward a night full of life.

Caroline Vain is the other Richmonder on the bill. Her debut EP is a dreamy landscape of Virginian countryside driving. You let it all sweep around you and embrace you—feel the warmth and the passion of an honest singer.

The Menzingers, Lucero, Queen of Jeans
ThursDAY, may 29th 2025
The National

In my opinion, there’s something very Richmond about Philly’s Menzingers. Their sound fits equally well on the grand stage of The National or in a dimly lit basement in Scott’s Addition. It speaks to the lowly and grungy, the broken and the optimistic. I know this group has been an influence for a number of local acts, so you might see some familiar faces there—or maybe you’ll be influenced yourself.

Lucero comes from a more Americana-leaning position. I really dig the organ in some of their tracks; it adds a train-hopping element you don’t hear too often anymore.

I’m also really liking Queen of Jeans. The vocals are haunting and experienced. This is the kind of sound you envision in your head, but it takes a special kind of person to make it real.

Destructo Disk, Tentative Decisions, Deathcat, This Man May Die
Friday, May 23rd, 2025
Get Tight Lounge

Destructo Disk is one of the most entertaining acts in town and, in my opinion, one of the biggest wins of the younger alternative scene that’s become so prominent here. You might know their big hits like “i wish I was a riot grrrl” or “cops / dogs,” but I encourage you to do a deep dive into their extensive discography. There’s a wide range of emotion and connection being made by this trio.

The support acts for this show are the best of the best.

Tentative Decisions made national news with their debut album last December, and they’re only getting better—and better—and better. I’m particularly infatuated with the cryptic and wild lyrics of singer Jack Sample, who seems to channel pure stream-of-consciousness into the mic.

Deathcat is another generational standout to emerge over the last few years. They have an indescribable ability to make you feel understood and seen. With switching vocals, their set covers the full spectrum.

This Man May Die is the youngest outfit on the bill, but they’re well beyond their years in talent. Their live presence is insanely fun, with the music to match. Check out their track “24 hour Party People” and dance your brains out.

NEW TUNES

Mad Mad World EP by Museum District

Back from a five-year hiatus, Museum District just dropped two new songs. The beats are bouncing, the visuals are electric, the vocals are crooning. It’s got me seeing colors that don’t exist. I’m over here moving things with my mind. The club is bouncing, the wine is flowing—now I’m about to do the splits.

Metro Sound Is Still Here. Richmond Just Keeps Making It Harder.

When Mark Szafranski bought the building at 117 West Broad Street in 1991, the property was in disrepair. Water seeped from the upper floors, the windows were falling in, and downtown Richmond was, at the time, more forgotten than revitalized. But Szafranski, a...
