Fifty million shows this week. I usually try to keep it to three or four, but there’s just too much unmissable stuff on the docket, I had to throw it all in.
Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.
Skorts, Tentative Decisions, Shagg Carpet
thursday July 31st, 2025
Get Tight Lounge
Skorts have actually been on my radar for a while. These NYC-ers are what’s happening right now. They have a bass-driven post-punk sound, reminiscent of bands like Snooper, Mannequin Pussy, and Gustaf. If I had to put money on it, the next time you see these folks will be at The Broadberry. They capture a very anthemic sound, which isn’t something you often find in post-punk, nothing but props. We gotta keep showing out every time a band like this comes to town. We need more!
The locals are two of my favorites. Playing support is Tentative Decisions, these guys exploded last year with the release of their debut album. Since then, they’ve been grinding out new songs live (“Tunnels” is one to catch before it hits a recording), and I personally can’t wait to see what comes next. Shagg Carpet is opening. They’ve been on a hot streak with three great singles, with Domestic Thought Experiment being my favorite song to come out in a long, long time. They just dropped their sophomore album, and I’m hopeful this set is packed with all those new, amazing songs.
QWAM, Dogsmile, Human Worm, Receiver
Friday August 1st, 2025
Cobra Cabana
NYC’s QWAM have released three amazing singles since the start of June, and they’re all very Richmond-coded. This kind of alternative rock fits right in at a burning Cobra show or a packed late-night gig at The Camel. Their sound is incredibly of the moment, passionate alt-rock with crunchy guitars and powerfully delivered vocals. My favorite of the new tracks is “Friend$$,” which drops the brutally honest line, “Do your friends cost money?” That might hit differently in NYC, but it’s a very real question for many kids entering VCU, caught at the whim of whatever group takes them in during those chaotic first few weeks of college.
Dogsmiles is coming all the way up from Jacksonville, Florida, with a super catchy, keyboard-driven sound. They balance serious lyrics with a fun energy—aggression wrapped in sweetness. The sound on their demo is already anthemic, which is no easy feat for a first release.
Everyone in town should be familiar with Human Worm. Their synth-punk sound deserves to be filling every hall in the city. Their debut single, “Mega Bitch,” was an instant hit, and they’ve followed it up with a self-titled EP that expands on that dancey, yet powerful, sound.
Receiver is opening the show with their ‘70s NYC-inspired vibe. I’ve been lucky enough to catch several of their sets since they started earlier this year, and their intelligently arranged sound never fails to impress.
804 Day Fest
Saturday August 2nd, 2025
Shockoe Bottom
I’ll never forget walking through the bustling scene of last year’s 804 Day in Shockoe Bottom, an insanely diverse lineup of Richmond talent on full display, right up until a massive storm rolled in and shut everything down halfway through. Even with the abrupt ending, 804 Day remains one of the city’s best showcases. Check out the website for the full lineup, but I’m especially excited to catch Nickelus F, Flora and the Fauna, and Bucko this year.
The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse
Sunday August 3rd, 2025
Shockoe Bottom
Brown’s Island has been such a godsend for bringing huge artists into RVA. The Flaming Lips have been a staple in American music for years and years. They’re one of the most prominent contemporary groups to blend pop and rock, which eventually helped them break into the mainstream. Their catalogue is impressive and has defined much of the early 2000s in American music.
Nothing gets the people going like “Float On” by Modest Mouse. Similarly, they’ve been an incredibly important part of the American alternative scene over the past few decades. They played a pivotal role in translating and evolving the ’90s sound into something more current. I think both bands will be remembered as defining acts of the early 2000s key figures in that chapter of music history.
Griffin Benton, Dayfiction, Rat Fight
Wednesday August 6th, 2025
Banditos
I’ve got to toss in a fellow Griffin to the soundcheck, luckily, his music more than earns it. Griffin Benton blends alternative rock, pop sensibility, and dance into a sound that’s tight, bright, and totally dialed in. It lands somewhere in the vein of The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. Catch him at Banditos now, because next time it’s going to be a much bigger stage.
Joining the fray is Dayfiction, a personal favorite post-punk group, fresh off the release of Peacemaker, their latest single. They put on one of the most intense and powerful live shows in town. And Rat Fight is another one I never miss, their mix of hardcore and punk makes for some of the most fun moshing in the city.
New Tunes
Hurting Other People by Shagg Carpet
Shagg Carpet’s sophomore album is out now! The local punk quartet decided to fly straight into the sunset with a record that’s impressively diverse. While a few tracks echo Bugged, their debut LP, this album really showcases their growth as songwriters. Disco, singer-songwriter moments, and noisier cuts all play prominent roles. The characters woven throughout are vivid and compelling, and many of the songs come out of left field—in the best way. It’s a wild ride of a record with serious replay value.
