Sound Check! Josiah and the Bonnevilles! Palm Palm! Bleed Out! & More!

by | May 30, 2025 | DOWNTOWN RVA, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, QUEER RVA

I like to think this list of shows and songs captures Richmond right now—blossoming folk, iconic RVA rock, scrappy hardcore, college post-punk on the rise, and country with a middle finger to the charts. That’s my Richmond, anyway.

Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Friday Cheers | Josiah and the Bonnevilles, Jonathan Paige Brown Jr.
Friday, May 30th, 2025
Brown’s Island

Oh, the glorious renaissance of modern indie folk. Josiah and the Bonnevilles are headlining Friday Cheers. They’re a sweet letter from Appalachian life—youthful, with age creeping into the inflection and experience. Each strum could have its own story, written out in novel-length texts stacked to the ceiling. There’s sincerity and loss in a single breath, a whisper and a cry blown through a worn harmonica.

Jonathan Paige Brown Jr..—the people are crying out for more music! Gift us more than just the one spectacular single. “Divine” is one of the most heartfelt things I’ve heard come out of this city. Paige Brown Jr. is a masterclass songwriter and knows exactly where to hit you to make you fall to your knees. So please—give us more!

Palm Palm, Shagwuf (night one)
Community Witch (night two)
Friday, May 30th & 31st, 2025
The Camel

The triumphant return of Palm Palm! These guys played the first show I ever saw in Richmond, and the image of a glammed-out J. Roddy surveying a smoky crowd from atop his kingdom at the head of The Camel will stay with me till the day I die. I think every Richmonder can get behind this. Anyone who’s seen a local Palm Palm show knows just how next level it is. This is our stake in the rockstar game—our shot at stadium shows. Luckily, for the time being, it’s still right down the street.

On the first night is the same band I saw at my Richmond baptism: Shagwuf.. Enough cannot be said about this trio—just raw power, talent, and force. The fact that they’re not touring the world right now is an anomaly to me.

I’ve yet to catch Community Witch live, but I couldn’t be more excited based on my initial listens. They sound like surf rock propelled far into the future. Goth surf rock? Whatever board you want to pin it on—it fucks.

Bleed Out, Undermined, Split in Two, Beast from the East, Throne of Gloom

Banditos

Bleed Out, photo by Bad Music

Bleed Out is pure, brutal hardcore noise. They absolutely know how to balance heavy breakdowns, speedy riffs, and exactly when to throw in those crowd-killing moments. I’m really in love with how savage the bass tone is.

Undermined brings a lot of versatility. They don’t seem afraid to stray from hardcore tradition, letting a wide range of influences sneak in. The growling vocals pair perfectly with the absolute nuke dropping on every crash hit from the drums.

Split in Two is a force to be reckoned with down Carolina way. This beatdown quartet sounds hard, takes no shit, and will swing right with you in the pit.

Beast from the East is NYC’s contribution to the bill—a tunnel of blast beats and hate. Double kick working overtime. This is the kind of set you die in, go down swinging.

As far as I can tell, this is Throne of Gloom’s first show. Based on their demo, they’re horrifying and grotesque (that’s a compliment), and clearly ready to wreak some havoc.

NEW TUNES

“Peacemaker” by Dayfiction
Peacemaker” has taken local post-punk outfit Dayfiction to the next level, giving them a professional sound that firmly places them in the ring with the best of that post-Brexit wave. I highly encourage a deep dive into the lyrics—they paint a vivid and violent picture of manhood, vulnerability, and the internal battle to push away thoughts that don’t serve you.

“Some Kind of Party (In Here)” by Kendall Street Company
Kendall Street Company takes a playful jab at what Nashville has been churning out for the last 20 years with Some Kind of Party (In Here). The true sign of a great track? It can take the piss and still come out a banger. They absolutely knock it out of the park, poking fun at the clichéd pop-country tropes. It’s a clear line in the sand—the aware vs. the unaware—and Kendall Street knows exactly where they stand.
